Zero Waste Task Force
We want you to be a pioneer for a project to eliminate waste on campus. Can you imagine a campus with only recycling cans and composting bins - no trash cans? The Zero Waste Task Force has formed to ultimately eliminate campus waste. For the moment, our focus is to develop a reliable compost facility on CSU, Chico’s farm so that we may begin composting food waste from our campus dining facilities. Soil generated from this compost will then be cycled back as nourishment for campus farm crops. If you are interested in learning more about Zero Waste or would like to participate in this exciting movement, we would love to hear your ideas. We meet weekly on Wednesdays at 10:30am in the BMU, room 301. You can also contact the AS Recycling Coordinator, Robyn DiFalco, 530-898-6677.

Campus Notice: Death of Jack Nolan, College of Agriculture
Jack Nolan died on Monday, November 19, 2007 in Chico. He taught in the College of Agriculture from 1958 until his retirement in 1980.
Nolan was born in 1920 in Pleasanton and attended high school in San Luis Obispo. He started college at Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo and then interrupted his education to enlist in the army in 1941. He was awarded the Silver Star for action in Southern Italy and a Purple Heart for wounds received at Anzio.
After the war, Nolan returned to Cal Poly and graduated with a BS in animal science. He taught agriculture at Colusa High School from 1946 to 1958.
Nolan was one of the first faculty members hired to teach agriculture at Chico State and part of the group of faculty that planned and developed the University Farm. “He worked alongside his colleagues for 22 years to build the agriculture program and the University Farm into a strong and effective agricultural institution,” said Dave Daley, College of Agriculture and a student of Nolan’s.
While he was teaching at CSU, Chico, Nolan received his master’s degree from UC Davis.
“Jack was a great teacher and a tireless educator,” said Daley. “He was ‘old school’ in his approach to discipline and hard work, but he truly cared about the education of all his students. He was a man of great integrity who left a mark on everyone he taught, including me. He was one of the best, toughest, and fairest teachers I ever had at CSU, Chico and in graduate school. He will be greatly missed.”
Nolan was married to his wife, Faye, who preceded him in death in 2001, for 53 years. His son, John, daughters Nancy Nolan and Cathy Pooler, and four grandchildren survive him.
There will not be a public service. In lieu of flowers, you may send donations in Nolan’s name to the California FFA foundation, P.O. Box 834, Elk Grove, Calif. 95759 or the 3rd Infantry Division, 9th Field Artillery, Battery C at Fort Stewart, Georgia, c/o Newton-Bracewell Chico Funeral Home. You may share your thoughts of Jack online at nbcfh.com.
The flag on Kendall Hall Lawn will be lowered on Wednesday, Nov. 28 in Nolan’s honor.

Model United Nations Students Excel at Regional Conference
Students participating in the Model United Nations (MUN) course at California State University, Chico made a stunning showing at the American West Model United Nations Conference Nov. 17-20 in Las Vegas. They brought home both the Distinguished Delegation award and the Outstanding Delegation award (the top awards given at the conference) and 10 out of 19 possible awards for position papers.
The theme of this year’s conference was “Empowering Cooperation: Confronting Obstacles to Peace.” Each of the 24 students who were members of the CSU, Chico team was assigned a country to represent at the conference within a specific committee (emulating the United Nations) and had three different topics to research for that country. The topics included contemporary forms of slavery, conflict diamonds, combating a nuclear black market, and confronting extremism and civil war in Iraq.
The Distinguished Delegation award went to CSU, Chico students representing Saudi Arabia: Asuka Hatta, Steven Kanavel, Tyler Hanges and Lauren Goll. The Outstanding Delegation award went to CSU, Chico students representing South Africa: Nathan Glover, Sarah Haskell, Heather McMurray, David Vielhaber and Jennifer Cox.
