Wunderkammer: Natural Curiosities by Eric Richter

Trinity Hall, CSU Chico
M-F 8am - 5pm (closed January 21)
Thurs., Feb. 7, Reception, 5-7pm

Eric Richter earned two BS degrees at Cal Poly, Pomona, one in horticulture in 1981 and the other in landscape architecture in 1991. He moved to Chico from “the vast urban sprawl of Los Angeles” and is fascinated by the landscape, bugs, bones, fungus, and plants he finds hiking and doing field work throughout the area as a utility forester and project manager with Western ECI. “Wunderkammer,” he writes, “is exploring a personal fascination with nature: the native and exotic, the strange and familiar.” Richter’s paintings are inspired by European cabinets of curiosities, collections of the bizarre and beautiful gathered from around the world for study, classification, and entertainment. He asks his viewers to “imagine dark musty rooms filled with preserved creatures, art, and other precious possessions.”

The Humanities Center Gallery is located in Trinity Hall on the CSU Chico campus. A reception for Wunderkammer: Natural Curiosities will be held Thursday, February 7, 5-7pm. For information, call 898-4642.

Trinity Hall
M-F 8am - 5pm (closed January 21)
Thursday, February 7, Reception, 5-7pm (artist’s talk at 6)

Department of Art associate faculty Michelle Davis photographs books in used bookstores. She then creates sculptural wall pieces that objectify what she describes as “book lust.” Davis graduated in 1985 from CSU, Chico, with a split emphasis in studio art and art history and spent the next fifteen years working in the gallery business, both in profit and nonprofit venues. She was a founding member of Chico’s 1078 Gallery in 1982. Her work at a photography gallery in Los Angeles stimulated her interest in becoming a photographer, which led to her earning an MFA in photography from the San Francisco Art Institute in 2000. Davis has since relocated to Chico where she continues to work in several different photographic media. Her pieces have been shown in the San Francisco Bay Area, Sacramento, and Chico.

For further information, call 898-4642.

*The Humanities Center’s theme for this year is “The Book” of which Davis’s show is part.

Staff Council Creates Christmas for 210 Children

The Staff Council at California State University, Chico is in its 22nd year of sponsoring the Needy Children’s Gift Program, and it’s been another wonderful year for the program. This year 210 children from 91 families will receive gifts through the generosity of departments and offices within the University. Some local businesses also participate.

“The generosity of people on campus who participate in the Needy Children’s Gift Program is heartwarming,” said Dana Francis, chair of the Staff Council’s service projects committee. “There is no better way to show my appreciation for all I’ve been blessed with than by giving to local families and children who might not have gifts to open or food to eat on Christmas. Although I am unable to see the families open their gifts, I can only imagine their excitement, and that makes my heart feel good!”

In the fall, departments and offices are assigned a family, and then individuals in the offices buy gifts for each child, beginning with necessities such as clothing and warm coats. The value of gifts for each child ranges from $100 to $150. This year, a generous donor made it possible for every young child in the program to receive a stuffed animal.
