Humanities Center Gallery: Reception for Michelle Davis and Eric Richter, Feb. 7
Now through Feb. 28, 2008
Books: Wall Sculptures by Michelle Davis*
and
Wunderkammer: Natural Curiosities by Eric Richter
Humanities Center Gallery
Trinity Hall, CSU Chico
M-F 8am - 5pm
Thurs., Feb. 7, Reception, 5pm - 7pm (artist’s talk at 6pm)
Department of Art associate faculty Michelle Davis photographs books and creates sculptural wall pieces that objectify what she describes as “book lust.” Davis graduated in 1985 from CSU, Chico, with a split emphasis in studio art and art history. Her work at a photography gallery in Los Angeles led to her earning an MFA in photography from the San Francisco Art Institute in 2000. Davis has since relocated to Chico where she continues to work in several different photographic media.
Eric Richter earned two BS degrees at Cal Poly, Pomona, one in horticulture in 1981 and the other in landscape architecture in 1991. “Wunderkammer,” he writes, “is exploring a personal fascination with nature: the native and exotic, the strange and familiar.” Richter’s paintings are inspired by European cabinets of curiosities, collections of the bizarre and beautiful gathered from around the world for study, classification, and entertainment.

*The Humanities Center’s theme for this year is “The Book.”

Rent Party, in Celebration of Black History Month, Feb. 2
The Black Faculty and Staff Association invite you to attend the Harlem Renaissance Rent Party, Sat., Feb. 2, 6pm - 9pm, on Harlen Adams Stage.
What’s a Rent Party? Well, that’s how some Harlemites in the 1920s and 1930s paid their rent. The host would hire a musician, and cook some food, and with the proceeds from the cover charge and the food and beverage sales, she or he would make enough money to pay the rent.
The Harlem Renaissance Rent Party recreates this tradition—except, this is a costume party. You can be anyone at all; however, the person you portray must have been alive sometime between Jan. 1, 1919 and Dec. 31, 1929. Period clothing of the 1920s is welcome and encouraged. Please join us for an evening of entertainment, food, and fun as we travel back in time to the Harlem Renaissance. Suggested donation is $5.00.
This event is being co-sponsored by the Cross Cultural Leadership Center.
For more information please contact Dr. Tracy Butts at x5151 or Tray Robinson at x4764.

‘The Cause’ Wins Jack Rawlins Environmental Prize
A student group that lives and works together to promote sustainable lifestyles received the $6,000 Jack Rawlins 2007 Environmental Prize.
Max Kee is a co-founder of the group that lives together in a house on West 4th Ave. in Chico, where they are striving to live a sustainable lifestyle and educate others in the process. Their efforts include growing a backyard garden, building a greenhouse where they produce starter plants for others, composting their vegetable food scraps, and adapting recycled materials for gardening, furniture and art.
The group works to reduce waste by buying foods in bulk, filling old containers with fresh food from Chico Natural Foods, and using reusable Chico-Bags exclusively. They are conscious consumers who consider packaging, materials, and how far a product is shipped as part of their purchasing decisions.

Chico State Students Work to Rebuild New Orleans
During the third week in January, 115 students, faculty and staff from California State University, Chico traveled to the New Orleans area to spend five days rebuilding houses devastated by Hurricane Katrina in 2005. This was the third trip to New Orleans for the “Rebuild New Orleans” project, and the trip with the largest number of volunteers.
The College of Engineering, Computer Science, and Construction Management (ECC) sponsored the program. Advisor Terry Battle, from ECC, accompanied the group, as did staff member Ben Duarte and faculty members James O’Bannon, Mark Maybee, David Shirah, Michelle Morris and Dale Lee.
“The devastation Hurricane Katrina had caused to the communities was apparent to the students as we drove to Camp Hope, an old school used as a hostel-like lodge for volunteer workers,” said Battle. “Forty students were bundled in three classrooms. They worked for the next five days from dusk until dawn in an effort to bring life back to the New Orleans area.”

Chico Unified School District and CSU, Chico Collaborate on Math and Science
Eleven new California Math Science Partnerships (MSPs) have been funded in the state, and Chico Unified School District (CUSD) has received two of them, one in science and one in mathematics. Both of these are collaborative ventures with California State University, Chico faculty, and both will support the efforts to establish professional learning communities within the school district. The grants extend for a three-year period and will involve more than 85 teachers.
The science grant Building Bridges seeks to connect expertise and research efforts in science education at CSU, Chico with the development of professional learning communities in the CUSD. The grant, for $1.08 million over three years, will allow a cohort of 36 teachers in grades 5-8 to work together.
A professional learning community is a small group of teachers who regularly work together to develop content knowledge, share teaching strategies and improve lessons. These learning communities will be developed over the duration of the grant via a lesson study model, a highly effective approach to improving teaching that has been used successfully in other countries (especially Japan) for several years. In this approach, teachers design a lesson together and then take turns teaching the lessons, revising and then evaluating the effectiveness of the changes.
