A tender and humorous look at Andula’s journey, from the first pangs of romance to its inevitable disappointments, Loves of a Blonde (Lásky jedné plavovlásky) immediately became a classic of the Czech New Wave and earned Milos Forman the first of his Academy Award nominations.

Feb. 26
The Holy Modal Rounders: Bound To Lose (2006, U.S.A.) 87 min. Directed by Sam Wainwright Douglas and Paul Lovelace

Part folkie, part insane, and totally drugged, fiddler Peter Stampfel and guitarist Steve Weber were an integral part of the notorious Fugs before forming their own unique psych folk group, the Holy Modal Rounders, in the early 1960s. While their weird lyrics, irreverent approach to folk music and freewheeling lifestyles kept them from achieving fame, these eccentric outsiders have drawn a small but dedicated following of luminaries and lunatics for decades.

The film includes interviews with Ed Sanders and Tuli Kupferberg of the Fugs; actor-playwright Sam Shepard, who served as drummer for the band from 1966-69; Dennis Hopper, who gave the band its greatest mainstream visibility by including their song “If You Want to be a Bird” on the EASY RIDER soundtrack; Ira Kaplan of Yo La Tengo and many others. More than just a chronicle of an obscure band, BOUND TO LOSE is a raucous celebration of a lost American subculture.

March 4
49 Up (2006,U.K.) 134 min. Directed by Michael Apted. Introduced by Laird Easton, History and Humanities Center Board.
“Give me the child until he is seven and I will give you the man.” Starting in 1964 with Seven Up, the UP Series has explored this Jesuit maxim. The original concept was to interview 14 children from diverse backgrounds from all over England, asking them about their lives and their dreams for the future. Every seven years, renowned director Michael Apted, a researcher for Seven Up, has been back to talk to them, examining the progression of their lives. From cab driver Tony to schoolmates Jackie, Lynn and Susan and the heart-breaking Neil, as they turn 49 more life-changing decisions and surprising developments are revealed. An extraordinary look at the structure of life in the 20th century, The UP Series is, according to critic Roger Ebert, “an inspired, almost noble use of the film medium. Apted penetrates to the central mystery of life.” OFFICIAL SELECTION: New York Film Festival.

Classic Cultural Films Reissued by Anthropology Museum

The Museum of Anthropology at California State University, Chico is reissuing two ethnographic documentaries based on the fieldwork of anthropologist Valene Smith Posey and filmed by photographer and cinematographer Ira Latour. “Three Stone Blades” was filmed in 1970, and “Visual Pioneers of the 19th Century: The World of Theodore Wores” was filmed in 1981.

The films have been reconfigured in a DVD format. “These films are treasures, both in their beauty and their importance in telling two ethnographic stories,” said Adrienne Scott, curator of the Museum of Anthropology. “These stories would literally disappear without them. Reissuing them is part of our mission to be ambassadors of multicultural education and preservation.”

“Three Stone Blades” provides a window into the world of Arctic peoples, whose wilderness and frozen lands have already disappeared. Posey and Latour filmed the 1970 documentary in Point Hope, a remote Alaskan village that has gradually been flooded by melting ice. Posey had done fieldwork with the Inuit in the area. Since then, area residents have been relocated, said Scott. Part of the purpose of the film was to record the last inhabited sod igloo supported by whale ribs in the North American Arctic.

Concrete Industry Management Students Will Participate in Historic Concrete Investigations at D-Day Site

Five Concrete Industry Management (CIM) students from California State University, Chico have the rare opportunity of traveling to France to assist in the evaluation of concrete bunkers on Pointe du Hoc, Normandy. Pointe du Hoc was the site of the historic World War II D-day landing in June 1944.

Tanya Wattenburg Komas, professor of a class in Concrete Repair and Preservation, part of the CIM program, holds a PhD in architecture and a certificate in historic preservation from Texas A&M University. Her colleagues at Texas A&M are part of an effort to evaluate the entire site of the historic landing for the American Battle Monuments Commission (ABMC). Texas A&M will survey the site and evaluate the cliffs on which the concrete structures rest. Komas and the CIM students are evaluating the concrete used in bunkers and other structures. They have already completed laboratory tests on concrete samples from the site.

In March, the team will travel to Normandy and conduct on-site testing of the structures. “We will be using state-of-the-art ultra-sonic pulse testing equipment loaned to us by companies that use this same equipment to evaluate new bridges, dams and other structures,” said Komas. The students will produce an “existing conditions” report that will combine the previous laboratory testing results and the upcoming fieldwork results. It will serve as the basis for proposing the next phase of the work at the site for which federal funding is being sought.

The College of Humanities and Fine Arts is hosting a tour to Spain and Portugal June 1-12, 2008. The faculty-in-residence is history professor Stephen E. Lewis, who earned his PhD from UC San Diego. His specialty is Latin American history. Students will be able to get 1-3 units of credit for course work related to the trip.

The $3,750 package includes round-trip airfare from San Francisco, airport fees, transfers, 3-4 diamond hotels, buffet breakfast daily, five dinners; comprehensive sightseeing tours of Lisbon, Mérida, Córdoba, Toledo, and Madrid; entrance included to Lisbon’s Ajuda Palace and Mosteiro dos Jeronimos, Mérida’s Roman Amphitheatre and National Museum of Roman Art and many other sites. Deadline is March 1.

Contact Thomasin Saxe, group coordinator, 530.898-4642. You may also check the web site.

“The trip will be great because it offers a sweep of the history and culture of Spain and Portugal, two countries that experienced transitions to democracy in the 1970s and have become two of contemporary Europe’s greatest success stories. Spain boasts the world’s ninth largest economy, and Portugal has made tremendous strides of its own, and its capital, Lisbon—where we will spend two days—is Europe’s up-and-coming destination.” Steve Lewis
