CSU, Chico Hosts Celebrate Teaching Conference

One Hundred and seventy high school juniors and seniors who are interested in becoming teachers will attend the Celebrate Teaching Conference at California State University, Chico on Wednesday, March 5. The conference, sponsored by the CSU, Chico Department of Education, provides high school students from around the North State with a day to explore teaching as a career.

The working title of the conference, said Darryl Eisele, director of Integrated Teacher Core and University Connection and one of the planners of the event, is “Inspiration, Information and Perspiration.” Attendees will receive input in all of these areas, said Eisele. They will hear from an inspirational speaker and teacher, get information about college entry and hear from student teachers about what the actual work of teaching is like.

A local motivational speaker, Scott Winter from LearningChange in Chico, will lead sessions in team building at the beginning and end of the conference. Winter was a college student when he became involved with student leadership activities that ultimately took him around the world, into high schools and college campuses. He has helped develop team dynamics and service learning programs as far away as Russia.

Humanities Center Gallery
Trinity Hall
M-F 8-5 (closed March 31)

Wed., March 5, Reception, 5pm - 7pm

Department of Art faculty Nanette Wylde is a conceptual artist who heads the Digital Media/Electronic Arts program at CSU, Chico. Kent Manske is a conceptual printmaker and faculty in art at Foothill College. They write, “PreNeo Press synthesizes life, art, and design to create individual and collaborative cultural artifacts and experiences. Projects take form as artists’ books, electronic and interactive works, democratic multiples, and fine art prints.”

Graphic Design major Jeremy Golden pairs up with IMC designer Chris Ficken to explore the lecture-hall experience by way of distracted minds: lecture notes that emerge as drawings and a series of fifty-year-old, birch-wood desktops recovered from Ayres 120 during a remodel in 2000. They write, “This show explores the wanderings of the right brain as it subverts the left brain’s attempts at productivity. We find pleasure in creative expression and freedom from the analytical mind.”

Screening of "Invisible Children," March 3

Phi Sigma Tau and the Religious Studies Society at CSU, Chico are proud to host a screening of “Invisible Children” on Monday, March 3 in Holt 170 at 7pm.

“In the spring of 2003, three young filmmakers traveled to Africa in search of a story. What started out as a filmmaking adventure transformed into much more when these boys from Southern California discovered a tragedy that disgusted and inspired them, a tragedy where children are both the weapons and the victims. After returning to the States, they created the documentary “Invisible Children: Rough Cut,” a film that exposes the tragic realities of northern Uganda’s night commuters and child soldiers. The film was originally shown to friends and family, but has now been seen by millions of people. The overwhelming response has been, “How can I help?” To answer this question, the non-profit Invisible Children, Inc. was created, giving compassionate individuals an effective way to respond to the situation” (http://www.invisiblechildren.com/about/whoWeAre/).

Join with us on March 3 in spreading awareness at CSU, Chico.

This event is open and free to the public. For more information visit www.invisiblechildren.com or call the Religious Studies Department Office at 530/898-5661.

Grammy-winning Congolese Afro-pop at CSU, Chico with Angelique Kidjo on March 15

Recent Grammy winner Angelique Kidjo and her band have spread her rhythmic, Afro-funk fusion to the four corners of the globe and crossed musical boundaries by blending tribal and pop rhythms of West Africa with funk, salsa, and jazz. Peter Gabriel says Kidjo’s “Spirit is irrepressible, and she brings life to everything she touches.”

Angelique Kidjo and her band will be performing at Laxson Auditorium on Saturday, March 15 at 7:30pm, courtesy of Chico Performances.

Tickets are $23 Premium, $18 Adult, $16 Senior, $14 Student/Child for more information visit the web site.
