CSU, Chico Model United Nations Delegation Brings Home Top Award from National Conference

For the second time in two years, students participating in the Model United Nations (MUN) course at California State University, Chico won the top award at the national conference held in New York over spring break. The Chico delegation, representing Saudi Arabia, was named the Outstanding Delegation from a field of more than 290 schools.

In addition to the Outstanding Delegation award, six individual students received top awards: Chelsea Schick and John Carter received top awards in the General Assembly First Committee; Aki Matsushima and Sara Haskall in Economic and Social Council Plenary; and Anna Birch and David Vielhaber in the U.N. Relief Works Agency for Palestinian Refugees.

“Every year Chico State’s MUN team performs very well at the conference,” said student Emily Cohen, head delegate. “To take home the top award for two years running is remarkable. The students were tremendous. They outperformed other delegations in all areas, including research, public speaking, diplomacy skills, formal and informal debating, policy writing and overall policy representation of Saudi Arabia.”

The Importance of Being Earnest
Introduced by Laura Nice, Humanities and English

Oscar Wilde’s comic jewel sparkles in Anthony Asquith’s film adaptation of The Importance of Being Earnest. Featuring brilliantly polished performances by Michael Redgrave, Joan Greenwood, and Dame Edith Evans, the enduringly hilarious story of two young women who think themselves engaged to the same nonexistent man is given the grand Technicolor treatment. Seldom has a classic stage comedy been so engagingly transferred to the screen. (1952, U.K., 95 minutes)

Conversations on Diversity, "Erotic, exotic and erased: Bi-racial identities," April 9

Being viewed as exotic and erotic, feeling marginalized and being categorized into one racial or ethnic group are some of the experiences that biracial people may experience. How one looks is often how one is viewed and treated. Can we really tell one’s racial and ethnic heritage based on physical appearance? Are we aware of the complexities of biracial identity development? Although being of mixed heritage is not new, what is new is how biracial and multiracial policy, attitudes and racial identity are being addressed in America.

Please join us in learning more about the multiplicity and fluidity of biracial identities. We will be meeting in BMU 210 from 12pm - 1pm on April 9, 2008 and snacks will be provided.

The intersection of politics and graphic art in Cuba presented by Dr. Sara Cooper, Foreign Languages and Literatures

Contemplating the series of events that transpired in Cuba and the United States between January 1, 1959 and December 2, 1961, one can easily see an absurd political tit-for-tat in which each country tried to establish itself as king of the sandbox. Nowhere does this play itself out more remarkably than in the Cuban funny papers, where in the great tradition of caricature worldwide, Cuban graphic artists vilified the United States, called into question US power and manhood, and taunted Uncle Sam to test the resolve of the Cuban people to resist invasion and political control. In this presentation, Dr. Cooper discusses several examples of political cartoons from 1959-1962 and 1998-2007 in order to demonstrate the humorous (and childish) development of the Cuban anti-US position during those years.
