Construction Management Faculty Share Building Information Modeling Expertise

Construction Management faculty from California State University, Chico recently returned from the 44th Annual Associated Schools of Construction’s (ASC) International Conference held April 2-5 at Auburn University, Auburn, Ala., where they presented work in building information modeling (BIM).

Professor Denny Gier presented his research paper, “What Impact Does Using Building Information Modeling Have on Teaching Estimating to Construction Management Students?” Professor Willem Kymmell, who has been involved with BIM for the last five years, provided curriculum development tips.

BIM is a new technology for managing and visualizing construction projects. BIM uses 3D models of a construction project that are linked to a database containing information on the project, such as costs, quantities of material, schedules, and specifications. Gier’s research showed that applying BIM in an estimating course had a small positive effect on construction management students’ ability to learn estimating skills.

104 min. Directed by Francois Truffaut. Introduced by Laird Easton, History and Humanities Center Board

Hailed as one of the finest films ever made, legendary director Francois Truffaut’s early masterpiece charts the relationship between two friends and the object of their mutual obsession over the course of twenty-five years. Jeanne Moreau stars as Catherine, the alluring and willful young woman whose enigmatic smile and passionate nature lure Jules (Oskar Werner) and Jim (Henri Serre) into one of cinema’s most captivating romantic triangles. The Exit Interview provides information about your rights and responsibilities as a borrower, payment options and offers information about loan consolidation. It also collects information about you to insure prompt accurate billing and deferment.

Direct Loan borrowers are urged to do their exit interview online at www.dl.ed.gov. You will need to have your U.S. Dept. of Education “Personal Identification Number ” to view your loans and to complete your exit interview. You may request your PIN at www.pin.ed.gov. Direct Loan borrowers may also use this PIN to access, monitor, and up-date accounts online, to make payments, or request deferments.

If you are unsure what type of loan exit you need to do, you may also use your U.S. Department of Education PIN to view your federal financial aid history online at www.nslds.ed.gov . This site displays all federal loans received, the schools where they were received, and contact information.

Students who received the campus-based federal Perkins Student Loan need to contact the Student Financial Services Office on campus @ 530-898-6336 or 530-898-6083 to arrange for an online Perkins Loan Exit Interview. The Perkins Loan Exit Interview needs to be initiated by campus staff.

Both Direct and Perkins Loan borrowers may come by Kendall Hall Room 213 to complete their Exit Interview requirement in person. No appointment is necessary.

April 29
Swimming Pool (2003, France/U.K.) 102 min. Directed by Francois Ozon. Introduced by Peter Hogue, emeritus, English.

One of Europe’s most daring and inventive writer-directors, Francois Ozon, reunites with his two favorite leading ladies, Charlotte Rampling (Under the Sand) and Ludivine Sagnier (8 Women). Sarah Morton (Rampling) is a famous British mystery author. Tired of London and seeking inspiration for her new novel, she accepts an offer from her publisher John Bosload (Charles Dance) to stay at his home in Luberon, in the South of France. It is the off-season, and Sarah finds that the beautiful country locale and unhurried pace is just the tonic for her—until late one night, when John’s indolent and insouciant French daughter Julie (Sagnier) unexpectedly arrives. Deliciously sophisticated and sexy.*

*Part of the Humanities Center’s year-long theme, “The Book.”
