Legion Avenue Closure Notice

To alleviate traffic congestion and parking difficulties during spring semester residence hall closing, Legion Avenue will be closed between Citrus Avenue and Warner Street on Thursday, May 22, and Friday, May 23, from 7:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. University Housing and Food Service and the University Police Department ask that you use an alternate route during this time. Thank you for your cooperation; it is greatly appreciated.

Scholarships for Teaching Credentials in Special Education

The Special Education Program within the Department of Professional Studies in Education announces its 2008 scholarship award period. Grants secured by the Program from the U.S. Department of Education provide students seeking credentials as Education Specialists for Mild/Moderate Disabilities with federal stipends to support costs of fees, books, and supplies. Scholarships are expected to be available through 2009.

Several pathways to the Education Specialist credential are available at CSU, Chico, including a regional internship program, an on-campus program, and the Concurrent Program that combines special education and elementary education preparation in order to prepare future teachers to meet the diverse needs of students, kindergarten through grade 12.

ASID White Elephant Sale, May 14

The ASID Student Chapter (American Society of Interior Designers) is holding their Spring White Elephant Sale on Wed., May 14 from 10am - 2pm on the lawn outside of Ayres. There will be great bargains on clothing, shoes, jewelry, posters, music, collectables, and various household items so come shop till you drop. Home baked goodies for sale as well.

This is the last workshop of the semester. Come learn more strategies for managing the stress of being a student, including recognizing symptoms of stress, dealing with stress in productive ways, and how to use relaxation techniques.

Mexican-American Singer Lila Downs Performs in Laxson May 10

Singer and songwriter Lila Downs brings sultry, hot Latino moves and music to Laxson Auditorium on May 10, courtesy of Chico Performances. The performance starts at 7:30pm.

In this presentation, Downs will be performing her signature sultry moves with her band - harp, sax, violin, bass, drums, percussion, accordion, guitar and clarinet, against mulit-media projected images. Downs giver her all in performances, doing what she does best - sexy music.

Downs creates a strongly layered and emotional music in which blues and jazz cohabitate with ranchera, and honky-tonk swings alongside romantic boleros, and re-imagines American and Mexican music as an on-going conversation between two great traditions. Downs’ get deep into the hearts and minds of common people, invoking lost loves, legends, and struggles to live. Invigorating a new wave of cross-border Latino music, Downs is perhaps best known for her Oscar-nominated song “Burn It Blue” in the acclaimed movie Frida.

Diversion Excursion Call for Volunteers

The 9th annual Diversion Excursion event is happening Thurs., May 22 and Friday, May 23, the last 2 days of finals week.

The purpose of this event is to divert reusable and recyclable materials from the landfill and donate everything to local charities, while educating students on waste diversion. Last year we diverted over 17,000 pounds from going to the landfill.

The program is designed to collect donations as university residents move out. Ten collection stations staffed with volunteers are set up at the on-campus halls: Shasta, Lassen, Whitney (2), Esken, and Mechoopda; and 4 tables at University Village.

We need 45 more volunteers to work a 2 hour shift and staff the tables to engage and assist the residents as they donate items. Volunteers are provided with a FREE t-shirts and snacks.

There will be an informative volunteer meeting with pizza on May 13 from 5pm - 6pm in BMU 209 or May 14 from 12pm - 1pm in BMU 312.

Be a part of this exciting opportunity to volunteer - bring your friends. Visit the AS Recycling office in BMU 301 or call 898-5033 to sign up.

Active Minds Meeting

Active Minds is a student-run mental health awareness, education, and advocacy organization on the college campus. The group is designed to utilize peer outreach to increase students’ awareness of mental health issues and symptoms of mental illness, provide information about available resources, encourage students to seek help as help is needed, and to serve as liaison between students and the mental health community. Its aim is to reduce the stigma surrounding mental illness and bring awareness to various mental health issues.

We are always looking for new members. Our next meeting will be Tues, May 13 at 5pm in MLIB 144. Help us gain awareness of an issue that touches all our lives!

Slow Food CSU, Chico Film Event, May 14

The Slow Food CSU, Chico student organization will be hosting a local cheese tasting and film on Wed., May 14 at 6:30pm in Butte Hall 101.

Come meet local cheese producers just outside of Butte Hall 101 from 6:30pm - 7pm, and join us at 7pm for the Emmy-nominated documentary, “Broken Limbs: Apples, Agriculture, and the New American Farmer.” For information on this moving film see www.brokenlimbs.org.

Campus Satisfaction Surveys Underway

We are pleased to announce that CSU, Chico will once again participate in the CSU Quality Improvement Satisfaction Surveys for twelve different areas throughout campus. Students, faculty, and staff have been randomly selected to receive links to surveys via an email invitation. If you receive a survey invitation, we hope you will take a moment to complete the survey. This information will help departments develop plans to better serve the needs of the students, faculty, and staff on our campus. The surveys will be conducted during through May 16, 2008. Please take this opportunity to provide feedback regarding various University services.

Students Take First Place in CSU Student Research Competition; Microbial Biochemistry Project Uses Industrial Waste to Make Biodegradable Plastic

Two California State University, Chico biology students won first place in the 22nd annual California State University Student Research Competition, held at CSU, East Bay May 2 and 3.

CSU, Chico seniors Christopher Paul Morris and Kevin Roy Parsons topped 18 other entrants from other CSU campuses with research in microbial biochemistry that has great potential for creating new uses and sustainable practices for waste products.

Their research project, “Use of Brewery Waste for the Microbial Conversion of Carbohydrates to Lactic Acid,” showed promising results in using industrial or agricultural waste, such as yeast or rice hulls, as a medium for bacteria to produce lactic acid, which can be made into biodegradable plastic.

Honorary Doctorates to Be Awarded to Ken Grossman and Marilyn Warrens at CSU, Chico Commencement

Ken Grossman and Marilyn Warrens, two of Chico’s best known and most respected citizens, will be awarded honorary doctorates at California State University, Chico’s 118th commencement later this month.

Warrens will receive the Honorary Doctorate of Fine Arts, and Grossman will receive the Honorary Doctorate of Humane Letters, conferred by the California State University Board of Trustees and CSU, Chico. The ceremony will be Sunday, May 25, as part of the University’s commencement exercises.

Grossman is the founder, owner and president of Sierra Nevada Brewing Co. The company has grown from essentially a home brewing operation in 1980 to the second largest craft brewery and seventh largest brewing company in the United States. Sierra Nevada is one of the largest locally owned employers in Butte County and has won more than 150 awards in regional, national and international competitions.

Graphic design majors wanted to design publicity materials for School of the Arts/College of HFA events and promotions. Experience with Macintosh computers and Adobe graphic design software. International Neighbors' Moonlight Cafe

International Neighbors is a student group on campus which aims to mix international and American students by holding regular weekly meetings, always with fun, unique programs and free snacks. If you’re interested in making new friends and meeting people of different cultures, drop by our get-together every Monday night when school is running, from 7pm to 8.30pm at Selvester’s Cafe-by-the-creek (beside Tully’s, behind Kendall Hall). Commencement Vending Policy

Just a reminder that under the policies contained in EM 86-12 no vendor, including recognized student organizations, may solicit, trade, or sell anything on campus without a permit from the Student Activities Office.

No permits for such sales and solicitation activity will be issued for Commencement weekend, Saturday and Sunday, May 24 & 25. If individuals and/or organizations are found to be conducting sales and solicitation, they will be asked to stop this activity, and if they refuse, University Police will be notified. We appreciate your cooperation in this matter.

International Workshop: July 4-16, Contigliano, Italy

This summer come study and experiment how to merge innovative interactive technology with history, art, and culture in the castle of a breathtaking medieval town in the heart of Italy.

Contigliano is a medieval citadel in the center of Italy, in the province of Rieti surrounded by nature, one hour from Rome.

This workshop is an 2-week full-time course, designed for students, scholars, and artists from architecture, design, media arts, and engineering fields about media theory, visual arts, and technology in their relation to oral history and urban interaction. The workshop has classes in English and offers quality individual tutoring, and is designed for the students to produce, at the end of the training, a multimedia art work to be exhibited in the medieval town. Moreover, this experience abroad wants to create an ongoing dialogue between international artists, as a longer term project.

The workshop is organized by the nonprofit association MEDIARS (Center for Interactive Media for Art and Entertainment) in collaboration with the town of Contigliano, together with international scholars from California State University, Chico, UCLA, the University of Florence and the University of l’Aquila.

Scholarship Program for Special Education Credential Candidates

The Special Education Program within the Department of Professional Studies in Education, California State University, Chico, announces the opening of its 2008 scholarship award period. Students seeking credentials as education specialists for mild/moderate disabilities can receive federal stipends to support costs of fees, books and supplies. These scholarships, made possible by grants from the U.S. Department of Education, will be available through 2009.

In addition to its on-campus Education Specialist program, CSU, Chico offers on-the-job training and support for special education teachers in 57 school districts throughout northern California. Nearly one half of course requirements are available in a distance education, online format. Specialized assistance is available to teachers of pupils with emotional and behavioral disorders. CSU, Chico’s Special Education Program has been noted for its innovative programs and nationally recognized as a leader in addressing the shortage of credentialed special education teachers.

German Consul General to Visit CSU, Chico

Joel Zimbelman, dean of the College of Humanities and Fine Arts, and Magda Mueller, professor of German in the Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures, are honored to announce the first visit of German Consul General Rolf Schütte to California State University, Chico. Never before has such a high-ranking German official come to CSU, Chico.

German Consul General of San Francisco Rolf Schütte will lecture on “Germany, the European Union, and the West Coast” May 16, at 2 p.m. in Trinity 100 Humanities Center Gallery. The lecture is followed by a reception at 3 p.m. hosted by Dean Zimbelman.
The German Consulate General focuses on establishing, maintaining and developing ties between Germany and residents of northern California, Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Hawaii, Montana, Alaska and Wyoming. The German Consulate in San Francisco was established in 1849, the first year of California’s statehood.
