Sustainability Summits, I, II, III

Sustainability Summits, I, II, III
Sept. 30, Oct. 27 and Dec. 2
Kendall 207/209
3pm - 5 pm

This semester we will hold three facilitated discussions about the following list of topics. Not every topic would be covered on any given date. Each conversation will be facilitated by a different person, depending on the topics. The purpose of the summits is to assess campus progress toward sustainability, compare ourselves to other “green” campuses, and determine the actions we will take to achieve our goals.

• What does it mean to be a “green” campus?
• How do we compare to other institutions within the CSU?
• How do we compare to other campuses in the U.S. that have received recognition for being “green”?
• What have we achieved to date and what are our commitments as a campus under the Presidents Climate Agreement?
• Are there gaps in terms of our own achievements, compared to others?
• How do we continue to create a culture of sustainability on campus?
• How can and should we continue to integrate sustainability into the curriculum?

Let us know which topics you feel deserve the greatest attention, and if there are others you would like to see added to the list, please send them to Scott G. McNall at the Institute for Sustainable Development. We hope that students, faculty, staff and community members and partners will join together in deepening the conversation about a sustainable future.

Announcing the Paul Persons' Award for Sustainability

The Institute for Sustainable Development is seeking nominations for a new endowed campus honor, The Paul Persons’ Award for Sustainability. Paul Persons was a committed environmentalist and a passionate advocate for integrating sustainability into the curriculum and across the entire California State University System.

To honor Paul’s memory and to help realize the goal of creating a sustainable future, the efforts of one faculty member will be recognized each year at the annual conference, This Way to Sustainability. In addition to the public recognition, a perpetual plaque and a cash award will be presented.

As we seek to recognize and reward those who are committed to integrating sustainability in all of its dimensions into the curriculum, please consider that sustainability involves an appreciation of the fact that the environment, the economy, and society are all tightly linked.

Please send your nominations to The Institute for Sustainable Development (zip 633; phone x3333) by October 17, 2008. We will contact those nominated and ask for a copy of their course syllabus (or syllabi) to compare the depth of integration involved and we will ask the nominees if we can share their course syllabi with the campus. We hope by this means, and others, to further the goals that Paul Persons set.

More ‘Green’ Honors for CSU, Chico

California State University, Chico continues to receive distinction for its work as a leader in sustainability and environmental programs.

Kiwi Magazine, a New York based bi-monthly print and online publication focusing on families and health, has for the second straight year profiled CSU, Chico among other U.S. colleges and universities. “Kiwi’s 2008 Green College Report features schools pioneering the way in campus sustainability, excelling in environmental stewardship, and making great strides toward going eco,” the article states.

Kiwi Magazine profiled 50 schools in its 2007 report, and 75 in the 2008 report. In the report’s introduction, the magazine attributed the higher number of schools to a tremendous surge in collegiate interest in sustainability. It pointed to the fact that from 2007 to 2008 the number of schools signing the American College and University Presidents Climate Commitment (ACUPCC) has increased from 206 to 560. In December 2006, CSU, Chico President Paul Zingg was one of the first seven signatories of the ACUPCC, which pledges to reduce and ultimately neutralize campus greenhouse-gas emissions.

Sustainability Tip: Fill Your Refrigerator to Save Energy

If your refrigerator isn’t full of food, fill the empty spaces in the back or shelves with reused, filled water bottles. A full fridge retains cold more efficiently than an empty one. Refrigerators and freezers consume about a sixth of all electricity in a typical American home. An average American can spend up to $280 per year to run a refrigerator, and much of this could be saved by keeping your fridge full.

For more information, see the Web site.

Weekly Sustainability Tips are brought to you by the AS Sustainability Program. For more information, or to get involved, call 898-6677 or visit BMU 301.

But then he meets his new zany roommates, and together, they discover girls, parties, study time, and multiculturalism in a large Arizona college campus. Can Pancho adapt? Will he survive away from home?

Shot entirely in Southern Arizona, “Pancho Goes To College” is a comedy feast for the eyes and ears. Scenic desert landscapes, crazy college parties, class lectures, rowdy Chicano bars, and an eclectic rock-norteno-hip-hop music soundtrack drives “Pancho Goes To College” as a fast paced coming-of-age comedy with heart.
