Global Gangsters
New work by Peter Jodaitis
Gallery hours: M-F 8am - 5pm (closed January 19)
Humanities Center Gallery
Trinity Hallway
898-4642
Thurs., Jan. 29, Reception, 5pm - 7pm (artist’s talk at 6pm)
Peter Jodaitis writes of his latest series: “Global Gangsters is my designation for the barbarian hordes in charge of America and large parts of the world. Like others before me (Piranesi, Goya, Philip Guston, to name a few), I have felt that I needed to express my reactions to what I have been witnessing. Using media such as charcoal, gouache, water color, ink, and oil on paper—usually devoted to my celebration of the human form, glories of nature, and inventions of literature—I have been compelled to portray literally, directly, or symbolically the acts and effects of torture, domestic horrors, and the glorification of greed, power, money, and fanaticism.”
Jodaitis has had shows in Boston’s Atlantic Monthly Gallery, New York’s Joseph Papp Theatre, San Jose’s City College Gallery, Palo Alto’s Cultural Center, and Los Gatos’ Tercera Gallery. He moved here in 1993 and has shown in the James Snidle Gallery, Chico Art Center, Cory’s, 1078 Gallery, Spice Creek Restaurant, Chico Paper Company, and previously in the Humanities Center Gallery.

Stanaway’s work is represented by Solway Jones in Los Angeles, and has been reviewed in Art Scene, ArtForum.com, and Artweek. The series from which this exhibit derives makes references to minimalism, modernism, and, as Stanaway writes, “good ol’ suburbia.” He also says, “I use crystalline forms, satellites, and the Mars Rovers as templates for drawings and plywood sculptures. The Crystalline Plywood Templates could be considered paper models for DIY crystals, faux bois inkblots, or a carpenter’s formal exercises.”

The Real Charlie Wilson’s War
Sponsored by The Book in Common at CSU, Chico
This documentary is about Charlie Wilson, the Texas congressman who teamed with a CIA agent to provide arms for the Afghani freedom fighters against the Soviets, which resulted in helping lay the groundwork for the growth of the Taliban. A question to ponder: Why did the U.S. understand the need for economic reconstruction after WWII but fail to incorporate this practice in the political turmoil of the Middle East? The film features a number of CIA, Pakistani, and Russian military operatives along with live footage of the conflict.
