Turtle Island String Quartet with Cyrus Chestnut, Feb. 17
If you love jazz music then come see Turtle Island String Quartet with Cyrus Chestnut.
Two greats in their own right, Turtle Island Quartet and pianist Cyrus Chestnut team together and are bringing a night of jazz greats to Laxson Auditorium, Tues., Feb. 17, at 7:30pm, courtesy of Chico Performances.
Question: What do a well-respected jazz pianist exploring the music of Elvis Presley and a string quartet that dares to attempt to recreate John Coltrane’s immortal A Love Supreme have in common?
Answer: A desire to sift out golden nuggets of musical beauty from the vast repertoire of musical compositions already penned. In this performance, entitled ICONS, Warner Brother’s recording artist Cyrus Chestnut and the Grammy award-winning Turtle Island Quartet take a journey through history with pieces that span from a reinterpretation of Brahms celebrated piano quintet to a gospel-tinged Down by the Riverside. The giants of jazz - Duke Ellington, Miles Davis, John Coltrane, and Louis Armstrong are given their just due. And bluegrass legends Bill Monroe and Flatt & Scruggs are also brought to the table in this musical feast. From the ICONS of music, these virtuoso players perform a program of unmatched brilliance.
Tickets are $22 Premium, $17 Adult, $15 Senior, $13 Student/Child and are available at the University Box Office, 2nd and Normal, 898-6333.

Harlem Renaissance Rent Party, Feb. 12
Black History Month Event: Harlem Renaissance Rent Party
Thurs., Feb. 12 at 7:30pm
Harlen Adams Theatre Stage
Mark your calendars now - you are invited to travel back in time to the 1920s and go to a Harlem Rent Party. What’s a Rent Party? That’s how some Harlemites in the 1920s and 1930s paid their rent. The host would hire a musician and cook some food, and, with the proceeds, pay the rent that month. Help us recreate this tradition with a special costume party to celebrate Black History Month. Come dressed as anyone who was alive sometime between Jan. 1, 1919 and Dec. 31, 1929. Please join us for an evening of entertainment, food, fun, and prizes for the best costume as we take a trip to the Harlem Renaissance. Suggested donation: $5 at the door; proceeds benefit student scholarships.
