College of Business Ethics Initiative Presents Author of Noted Book on Unethical Behavior

California State University, Chico’s College of Business Ethics Initiative presents author, journalist and lecturer David Callahan on Tuesday, March 24, at 5:30 pm in the BMU Auditorium on the CSU, Chico campus.

Author of the widely acclaimed book The Cheating Culture, Callahan will focus his presentation on the rampant dishonesty within today’s economic system and the role that leaders must play to combat unethical behavior.

Founder of Demos, a public policy group based in New York City, Callahan has received national attention for The Cheating Culture, a nonfiction comment on unethical behavior in the United States. Since it was published in 2004, it has been reviewed and discussed in many of the country’s most well-respected newspapers and magazines. The Los Angeles Times called the book “a breathtaking book,” while Esquire magazine stated that it is “a damning and persuasive critique of America’s new economic life.”

Northern California Natural History Museum Becomes the Gateway Science Museum

The Northern California Natural History Museum at California State University, Chico is changing its name to the Gateway Science Museum.

“We are very excited to announce the results of an extensive study regarding the name of the museum,” explained Judy Sitton, museum board president. “We have discussed a name change for a long time and conducted a comprehensive, independent study. We determined that a shorter, catchier name would be easier to remember, especially for our younger audience members.

“Our market survey found the majority of respondents preferred the concept of gateway over several other choices, as well as the existing name. We have often used this term to describe the museum as a gateway to science, education and the North State. So, it became a comfortable choice for the museum.”

The Earth Month Zero Waste Challenge

Do you think you’re up to the challenge?

For the 30 days of Earth Month, the Zero Waste Task Force will be hosting the semi-annual Zero Waste Challenge. Throughout the challenge, participants will carry around a bag that will stand in as their trash can; anything they would normally throw into the garbage would instead go into their bag. All items that can be composted or recycled should be diverted properly of course and we highly encourage the reuse of items if at all possible.

Challengers in the past have chosen to participate for a few days or a week instead of the fully allotted time for the Challenge. Regardless of the duration of time of participation, challengers learn a great deal about their consumptive habits and how to reduce the amount of waste their sending to the landfill.

Contact Lauren Pope, Zero Waste Project Director for more information and to sign up for the challenge! Participants can also sign up in the AS Sustainability office in BMU 301.

Once they have served their original function, I reuse them for a variety of purposes; most recently, I have been using them to create art. This work is a reflection on these quotidian objects that permeate our everyday lives … [the] bags have been transformed … emptied, flattened, and shaped into fluid forms that hover within a depthless space.” More on Kessmann can be found at his website: www.deankessmann.com.
