Educational Opportunity Program (EOP) is hiring Paraprofessional Advisors

The success of the Educational Opportunity Program (EOP) is largely due to the students that work in our office. EOP values its student employees and provides opportunities for professional growth. We are currently hiring paraprofessional Advisors for the 2009-2010 academic year and applications are due Tues., April 14, 2009.

The paraprofessional advisor works directly with students participating in the EOP First Year Experience to help them transition to college life. These duties include academic advising, co-leading university life workshops, and organizing cultural activities for the students. The paraprofessional advisor has the opportunity to be a great role model to new students. For complete job description and application please click the links below.

The Excel II 2007workshop will use and build on many of the skills students have learned in Excel I, such as: the worksheet, menus, keyboard, cells, formulas, functions and The Ribbon. Students will plan, create, design and edit a chart using the Chart tool and Chart gallery. They will learn how to enhance a chart using titles, legends, annotations, arrows and WordArt. They will also learn how to save and print a chart.

Chico State Birding Club (CSBC), April 13

Jay Bogiatto, Biology Department Faculty Member, will be our guest speaker and will present a slide show of his and Shelly Kirn’s birding adventures in Central America.

If you are interested in avian natural history, ecology, biodiversity, birding, learning more about birds, practicing with field identification of birds or doing field trips (both locally and beyond) then join the CSBC.
We are a group of students (both undergrad and grad), faculty, staff, and community members passionate about fostering an awareness of avian biodiversity and “birding” through monthly meetings and various outings. We welcome all levels of experience and/or background. We encourage beginners and experts and every level in between.

Snacks and sodas/waters will be provided. There will also be a free raffle (that’s right, free) for some super cool, bird-related items.

To Infinity and Beyond - Tara Davis of Vanderbilt, April 17

On Friday, April 17, Tara Davis of Vanderbilt University will be speaking on “To Infinity and Beyond” at 3pm in Holt 185. The talk is co-sponsored by the Math Club and Pi Mu Epsilon, math honors society. Refreshments will be served, and inductions to Pi Mu Epsilon will follow the talk.

Abstract: Infinity is a universal idea that has captured man’s imagination for centuries. It is ubiquitous in mathematics, art, philosophy and science. But what is infinity? We will discuss this question through the framework of history, anthropology, and mathematics, and along the way will meet some challenging questions which will illuminate just how mystical infinity really is.

Free-Re-Cycle in April

Net Impact will be hosting a freecycle type event open for all students, faculty and staff. Do your spring cleaning and bring anything that you don’t want that is clean and in usable condition to the Free Speech Area on Wed., April 15 and 29. We will accept any clothes, books, supplies, tools, furniture, household & kitchen items, etc. Just drop them off and browse other items for things you need. Everything is free. Give what you can, take what you want. Avoid the landfill. Let others reuse your old belongings, what’s old to you is new to someone else. Any leftover items will be donated to local fire victims.

Big Chico Creek Ecological Reserve Spring Hikes

Big Chico Creek Ecological Reserve (BCCER) is scheduled to host a series of natural history hikes every weekend from March 28 through May 3, 2009. Folks from BCCER will lead group trips on an exploration of Big Chico Creek Canyon. Come and enjoy the spring weather, move through blooming flowers and creek side riffles as you experience an educational visit to Big Chico Creek Ecological Reserve. Hikes will vary in difficulty, allowing an opportunity for everyone.

Difficult hikes. 4/19, meet at 9am (All Day Trip)
Moderate hikes. 4/11, 5/3, 10am - 2pm
Easy hikes. 4/26, 10am - 2pm

All hikes meet at the Highway 99 Park and Ride. Everyone should wear sturdy hiking shoes and bring a sack lunch to enjoy along the hike. Trips are rain or shine, so come prepare.

Trips are free to the public, but charitable donations are gladly accepted.

Free BBQ, April 16

There will be a free barbecue to promote the AS Elections on Thurs., April 16 from 11am - 2pm in the Free Speech Area. The barbecue is hosted by AS FLO and will be Hawaiian themed. There will be free games, prizes and food. The food will be served at 12:30pm.

To get food, students must talk with at least one election candidate and receive a flower lei with a food ticket attached. After receiving the lei, the student may redeem the ticket for food.

University Hosts All Majors Career and Internship Fair

The CSU, Chico Career Center will host its spring All Majors Career and Internship Fair on Thursday, April 16, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in CSU, Chico’s BMU Auditorium.

Attendees such as HP, Hyatt, Peace Corps, US Forest Service and Lilly USA (pharmaceuticals) will have contact with a variety of students from across campus seeking internships and full-time positions.

“Career fairs at Chico State continue to be strong, even in light of the extremely challenging economic times,” said Career Center Director Jamie Starmer. “Students continue to make significant professional contacts at our career fairs, which directly lead to professional jobs and internships.”

Sixth Annual Alumni Spring Tri-Tip Barbeque in May

Join the Chico Chapter of the Chico State Alumni Association at their sixth annual Spring Tri-Tip Barbeque. The barbeque will take place on Thursday, May 7, from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Yolo Lawn, located behind Shurmer Gym on the CSU, Chico campus.

Tickets are $8 per person or $15 for two. Sponsorship opportunities are available for a minimum of $100 each. Participants will have the opportunity to meet fellow Chico-area alumni and friends. Guests can purchase hourly parking permits from the 2nd/Normal Lot, Stadium Lot, or the Parking Structure. Permits are $1 per hour (up to four hours) or $5 for the entire day. These permits allow parking in any “G” stall on campus

A powerpoint presentation that covers the first and second trip of Melissa Dalzell to Our Lady of Perpetual Help Education Centre (OLPHEC) in Kenya, Africa. The focus will be on the work of children and staff to create a more sustainable Centre. Some of the projects include composting, environmental education, and a library. A great chance to see how children in other countries are joining the ‘green’ movement.

Nomination Guidelines: Nominations can originate from any CSU, Chico faculty, staff member, student, alumni or community member. Please provide a brief rationale for your nomination, such as relevant activities that promote diversity.

Selection Process: Recipients will be selected by the Conversations on Diversity committee based on his/her/their commitment to diversity.

Presentation of Awards: Awards will be presented at the Conversations on Diversity Achievement Awards and Reception on Wed., April 29 at 12pm in BMU 210.

LGBTQIA Meetings Every Tuesday

Pride/Safezone hosts LGBTQIA meetings every Tuesday, 6pm - 8pm in BUTTE 323.

Pride is designed to provide socialization and interaction between lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgendered and straight-allied college students. Pride also functions as a political, social service, and educational body on campus.

Pride/Safezone events in Spring 2009 include the 4th annual Running with Pride, a 5 mile run/fun walk on May 3 and a LGBTQIA social/dance on April 17 in Selvester’s Cafe.
