Come listen to an amazing woman named Nonie Darwish speak on April 28 at 7:30pm in PAC 144.
Nonie is a speaker and author of three books with her most recent being Cruel and Unusual Punishment. She is going to be speaking about possible peace solutions between Palestine and Israel and also woman’s rights in the Muslim world. She was born in Egypt and grew up in the Gaza strip. She has first-hand experience living in this region of the world. Today, she is Christian and lives in Southern California. She has a unique message which is to promote reconciliation, acceptance and understanding between Israelis and Arabs.

University Housing and Greek Life Help Campus Recycle and Raise Money for Charities
To reduce the amount of reusable items discarded over the course of the year, University Housing and Food Service, residence hall councils and Greek Life are hosting the Yours, Mine, Ours Yard Sale Friday, April 17, and Saturday, April 18, from 8 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. at Selvester’s Café (just north of Kendall Hall).
All proceeds will be contributed to two nonprofit organizations: Up ‘Til Dawn and Pennies for Peace. Unsold items will be donated to a local group.
Members of the campus community and area residents are invited to the event.

Nobel Prize-Winning Economist to Speak on Climate Change
Economist and author Jason Shogren, one of the scientists sharing the 2007 Nobel Peace Prize with former Vice President Al Gore, will speak this Thursday, April 16, at 6:30 p.m. in Ayres 106, on the California State University, Chico campus.
Shogren is the Stroock Professor of Natural Resource Conservation and Management in the Department of Economics and Finance at the University of Wyoming. His research examines the behavioral underpinnings of public policy, especially for environmental and natural resources.
Shogren is the editor of “Resources and Energy Economics,” a foreign member of the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences and a former senior economist for environmental and natural resource policy at the White House (1997).

Wholesome Canned Food Drive, April 20 - May 1
OPT for Fit Kids is developing a “Food Closet” filled with whole grains, beans, and other healthy non-perishables to be distributed to needy families as they complete nutrition education sessions. Monthly educational sessions will include tips on budgeting, healthy shopping tours, and cooking classes, designed and presented by our qualified staff. Participants will be awarded a healthy food basket after each session. This will help families with the tools they need to maintain a healthy lifestyle.

Simulation Center Has Anniversary Open House
The Rural Northern California Clinical Simulation Center is hosting a second anniversary open house Thursday, April 23, 1-4 p.m. The Rural SimCenter is located at 560 Cohasset Road at the Enloe Medical Center Cohasset Campus.
The Rural SimCenter is operated by the California State University, Chico School of Nursing and its partners the Butte College Nursing Program, Enloe Medical Center and Feather River Hospital. At the center, nurses train on life-like state-of-the-art human patient simulators. The devices are capable of mimicking illnesses, medical emergencies and other patient conditions that health professionals manage.
The open house event, titled Crossing the “t” in Patient Safe-Ty, will be an afternoon tea with refreshments. The center’s mission is to “Increase patient safety through improved clinical proficiency and teamwork.”

A powerpoint presentation that covers the first and second trip of Melissa Dalzell to Our Lady of Perpetual Help Education Centre (OLPHEC) in Kenya, Africa. The focus will be on the work of children and staff to create a more sustainable Centre. Some of the projects include composting, environmental education, and a library. A great chance to see how children in other countries are joining the ‘green’ movement.

Amanda Riner earned her BFA from CSU, Chico in 2003 and her MFA from Hunter College (NYC) in 2008. While at Chico, she was the assistant/preparer for the Humanities Center Gallery. Riner has shown at the Queens Museum, Pratt Institute, 1078 Gallery, Florence Institute, and the Turner; been the recipient of various awards; and held several residencies. She currently resides in Queens and returns to Chico for this show’s reception.
Josh Olivera, first-year MFA student in painting, is the current assistant/preparer for the Humanities Center Gallery. Born and raised in Northern California, Olivera works in plywood, paper, resin, and ink.” He shows along with Sandi Escobar, second-year MFA student in ceramics, and past assistant/preparer for the Gallery. Escobar grew up in Los Angeles and earned her MA in studio art at CSU, Northridge.

To Infinity and Beyond - Tara Davis of Vanderbilt, April 17
On Friday, April 17, Tara Davis of Vanderbilt University will be speaking on “To Infinity and Beyond” at 3pm in Holt 185. The talk is co-sponsored by the Math Club and Pi Mu Epsilon, math honors society. Refreshments will be served, and inductions to Pi Mu Epsilon will follow the talk.
Abstract: Infinity is a universal idea that has captured man’s imagination for centuries. It is ubiquitous in mathematics, art, philosophy and science. But what is infinity? We will discuss this question through the framework of history, anthropology, and mathematics, and along the way will meet some challenging questions which will illuminate just how mystical infinity really is.

April 25 "Ramparts" Band Concert to Feature Civil War-era "Coded Song"
CSU, Chico’s School of the Arts presents Ramparts, the annual spring band concert featuring the CSU, Chico Wind Ensemble, Sat.,, April 25 at 7:30pm in Harlen Adams Theatre.
The Wind Ensemble, directed by Royce S. Tevis, Department of Music faculty member, will be joined during the concert by several other student ensembles — the Beans and Rice Experiement, a jazz combo; and the Windsperation Duo, a flute and harp group.
Works performed during Ramparts will include “Swing Low, Sweet Chariot,” by Steven Rouse and “Fandango” by Joseph Turin. “Fandango” will feature Ayako Nakamura on the trumpet and Laura Antonius on the trombone.
“Swing Low, Sweet Chariot,” which is considered a “coded song,” is one of a handful of Civil War-era spirituals that refer directly to the “underground railroad” - an escape route for slaves in the south. A personal favorite spiritual of underground railroad “conductor” Harriet Tubman, many of the code words in this piece refer to escape from slavery.

This course explores the impact of technology on our lives. Aspects of our complex technological society are investigated through study of the various forms technology takes, and readings in contemporary literature regarding the impact these technologies have on individuals. Students are encouraged to reflect on technology in their own lives through journaling, and to discourse with their peers the benefits and harm to individuals, society, and humanity that modern technology presents.
