Canned-food and Spare Change Collection Table, April 30

Management 431 is sponsoring a canned-food drive for the Jesus Center Thurs., April 30. A table will be located near Glenn Hall for donations of either canned-food or spare change to go towards canned-food. Anything that you can donate will be much appreciated.

The Cost of Violence, April 29

The California State University, Chico Peace Institute invites all students to our “The Cost of Violence” event, this Wed., April 29, at 7pm at HOLT 170.

The event includes four 15 minute presentations and a public discussion on the cost of violence in everyday life. Please join us.

Guest speakers include:
Michael Coyle, Department of Political Science: “Modern Civil Warfare in the US: The Violence and Harms of the Criminal Justice System.”

Cinco De Mayo Latino Comedy Chaos

The Men of Gamma Zeta Alpha Fraternity Inc. at Chico State University. (Alpha Chapter) present Cinco De Mayo Latino Comedy Chaos.

Orion Internships Available

The university’s award-winning newspaper, The Orion, is looking for excited and talented new staff. Internships are 2-3 units, depending on your major, and include the following positions:

Graphic design/art: Illustrators and page/layout designers
Writing: staff reporters for features, opinion, sports, online and possibly broadcasters for video
Copy editing: Section copy editors and online editors needed
Photo/multimedia/video: Photographers, Web designers and videographers

Nonie Darwish , April 28

Come listen to an amazing woman named Nonie Darwish speak on April 28 at 7:30pm in PAC 144. Nonie is an author and a speaker. She is the author of three books with her most recent being “Cruel and Unusual Punishment”. She is going to be speaking about possible peace solutions between Palestine and Israel. She was born in Egypt and grew up in the Gaza strip. She has an unique message which is to promote reconciliation, acceptance and understanding between Israelis and Arabs.

A Tribute to Tango, Tang First Century, May 13

Chico Performances presents a night of lively, seductive dance with spicy music, as Tango First Century comes to the Laxson Auditorium stage on Wed., May 13, 2009 at 7:30pm.

In a dazzling tribute to tango, Tango First Century presents an intoxicating and sensual fusion of enchanting song, fancy footwork, and musical mastery. Three couples explore the passion of traditional and contemporary tango, gracefully executing the dance’s intricate steps to pulsating beats delivered by an internationally acclaimed septet of musicians. This performance is supported, in part, with funds provided by California Presenters.

Tickets cost: $23 Premium, $18 Adult, $16 Senior, $14 Student/Child, and are available at the University Box Office, 898-6333.

Wild Oak Music Group presents: Car Smash!, April 29

In collaboration with All-Star Towing, Wild Oak Music Group brings you one smashing event:

Free Speech Area where the Adventure Outings “Bike Cart” is normally located.

Cost: $1.00 to smash the car once. $5.00 to have an all-out smash fest for 30 seconds.

All money donated for the car smash will go towards raising funding for scholarships for Music Industry students.

Sustainability Internship Positions

The Institute for Sustainable Development has two summer internship positions currently available:

Climate Summer Intern - 3 unit intern at approximately 12 hours per week - will assist in a campus-wide greenhouse gas inventory as well as development of a climate action plan.

Public Relations and Marketing Summer Intern - 3 unit intern at approximately 12 hours per week - writing and distributing press releases on the campus sustainability efforts, marketing of projects and programs, including the maintenance of the Institute’s Facebook account, multi-media promotion of upcoming sustainability events and speakers, tabling at informational booths, and recruitment of students to our annual This Way to Sustainability, V Conference.

Political Scientist Selected as Fulbright Distinguished Chair at Australia National University

Diana Dwyre, professor of political science in the College of Behavioral and Social Science at California State University, Chico, has been named the 2009-2010 Fulbright Distinguished Chair in American Political Science at Australia National University (ANU) in Canberra. She will be in residence in Australia’s capital, Canberra, during spring 2010.

The ANU Distinguished Chair position is intended to increase the awareness of the study of American politics and government in Australia and promote comparative and collaborative research in political science between Australia and the United States. Dwyre will be affiliated with the ANU School of Social Sciences in the Faculty of Arts.

The Fulbright Distinguished Chair Program is viewed as among the most prestigious appointments in the Fulbright Scholars Program, which is sponsored by the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs of the U.S. State Department. More than 800 Fulbright scholars are selected every year, but only 39 are named distinguished chairs.

Chico on $10 a Day: Learn to Eat Locally with Nutrition and Food Sciences

The third Chico on $10 a Day event will be held on Saturday, May 9, from 1 to 3 p.m., in Selvester’s event room on the California State University, Chico campus. The public is invited to taste delicious dishes using local ingredients purchased at the local farmers’ market.

Students from the Department of Nutrition and Food Sciences (NFSC) will provide information and free breakfast and lunch samples to show you how you can eat locally on $10 a day.

This sustainability event is a part of the NFSC food service production course. Students will use sustainable practices in all stages of the project, including growing fresh herbs to use in the food preparation. They will walk to and from the local Saturday farmers’ market, use canvas bags for shopping, prepare all food, compost scraps, use standard recipes and budget three meals for $10. They will even decorate with recyclables.
