The Devil Came on Horseback, May 13

7pm
Butte 101

The Devil Came on Horseback is a documentary that depicts the lives of millions of people being displaced and killed in the violence that began five years ago and continues today in Darfur, Sudan. “It’s superb, period. It tells the story of Brian Steidle, the young former Marine captain who went to Darfur as a military observer and gradually became horrified, frustrated, and disillusioned that his job was only to observe genocide, not to stop it.” -Nicholas Kristof ( The New York Times)

The event is organized by STAND (Students Taking Action Now: Darfur). For more information contact chicostand@gmail.com.

Book Publishing a Unique Teaching Strategy for Future Health Educators

Mark Tomita, Department of Health and Community Services, teaches students to meet the technological challenges in public health education through the development of hardcopy books. Tomita, who teaches Computer Applications in Health Education (HCSV 260), has the editing help of colleague Vic Sbarbaro.

“The students take a project from scratch all the way to marketing of the product. The students must write content for the book, format the book, design a book cover based on the target population, learn about how to obtain ISBNs and barcodes, and how to subcontract the book printing to online book printing companies,” said Tomita. “Essentially, they must know how to publish a book when they are done.”

Along the way, they learn the basics of desktop publishing programs such as Word and Photoshop and how to use storytelling teaching strategies in health education. One Hundred and sixteen students worked on four books during the 2008-2009 academic year. The project was funded by a College of Behavioral and Social Sciences Strategic Performance Grant and Faculty Professional Development funds.

Health and Community Services Students Win First ‘College Bowl’ Competition

California State University, Chico students from the Department of Health and Community Services won a first-of-its-kind “College Bowl” competition April 25 sponsored by The California Association of Healthcare Leaders (CAHL), a chapter of the American College of Healthcare Executives.

A team of four CSU, Chico undergraduates beat a team of graduate students from host school University of San Francisco in the inaugural Health Services Administration College Bowl.

The competition—in the fashion of some TV quiz shows—was designed to sharpen and test the skills of the universities’ healthcare management programs. Students fielded questions in 11 healthcare topic categories: governance and organizational structure, human resources, finance, healthcare technology and information management, quality and performance improvement, laws and regulations, professionalism and ethics, healthcare, management and business.
