Upward Bound Projects Summer Employment Opportunity

Community Service Group Leader

Group Leader will assist in the operation and implementation of the career exploration component with a focus on sustainability for high school students participating in the CSU, Chico Upward Bound Projects. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to: supervision of up to six high school students; participant instruction and monitoring, compliance with Workforce Investment Act (WIA) and other applicable regulations particularly in the area of safe work practices and child labor laws. Ability to write clear and concise student performance and final program evaluations.

The ability to direct and motivate high school students, demonstrated organization and mentoring skills are necessary. Previous experience supervising adolescents is highly desirable. The ability to implement the specific goals of the positions described below.

Regular hours will be Monday-Thursday from 1:00 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. from June 15-July 23, 2009.

Employment is contingent on a background clearance (fingerprinting).

Legion Avenue Closure Notice

To alleviate traffic congestion and parking difficulties during spring semester residence hall closing, Legion Avenue will be closed between Citrus Avenue and Warner Street on Thurs., May 21, and Friday, May 22, from 7am - 6pm. University Housing and Food Service and the University Police Department ask that you use an alternate route during this time. Thank you for your cooperation, it is greatly appreciated.

Don't Abandon Your Pets

Friends of Animals is urging students to not abandon their pets at the end of the semester. At the end of each semester a large number of pets are abandoned when their student owners leave town. A pet is a life-long responsibility and the animal is fully dependent upon its owner for food, shelter, and care. If you have a pet and cannot keep it when you leave the University, please contact the Butte Humane Society at 530/343-7917. Their website is www.buttehuman e.org. The animal shelter is located at 2579 Fair St. in Chico.

Amanda Riner earned her BFA from CSU, Chico in 2003 and her MFA from Hunter College (NYC) in 2008. While at Chico, she was the assistant/preparer for the Humanities Center Gallery. Riner has shown at the Queens Museum, Pratt Institute, 1078 Gallery, Florence Institute, and the Turner; been the recipient of various awards; and held several residencies. She currently resides in Queens and returns to Chico for this show’s reception.

Josh Olivera, first-year MFA student in painting, is the current assistant/preparer for the Humanities Center Gallery. Born and raised in Northern California, Olivera works in plywood, paper, resin, and ink. He shows along with Sandi Escobar, second-year MFA student in ceramics, and past assistant/preparer for the Gallery. Escobar grew up in Los Angeles and earned her MA in studio art at CSU, Northridge.

Today and Tomorrow: Criminal Justice Problems and Solutions, May 12

Graduating seniors of the Criminal Justice program have worked diligently all semester to identify problems in the Criminal Justice System and recommend a body of proposals to amend them. A Q&A session follows.

The Devil Came on Horseback, May 13

The Devil Came on Horseback is a documentary that depicts the lives of millions of people being displaced and killed in the violence that began five years ago and continues today in Darfur, Sudan. “It’s superb, period. It tells the story of Brian Steidle, the young former Marine captain who went to Darfur as a military observer and gradually became horrified, frustrated, and disillusioned that his job was only to observe genocide, not to stop it.” -Nicholas Kristof ( The New York Times)

Beauty & the Beast, Jr. is coming to Chico State, May 20

Adapted from the Academy Award-winning animated film, Chico Performances and the CTC “Rising Stars” present Beauty & the Beast, Jr. at Laxson Auditorium May 20, 2009 at 7:30pm.

With fun musical numbers, charming sets and elaborate costumes, this magical story is brought to life with all the favorite Disney characters including Belle, the Beast and all of the enchanted characters of the Beast’s castle. Watch in anticipation as the beast transforms into the prince he is supposed to be, as Belle helps him learn about compassion and love.

Performed by a group of 45 talented actors between the ages of 7-17 from CTC “Rising Stars,” this fairy-tale performance is sure to warm everyone’s heart with its message that when you love someone, they are beautiful just the way they are.

A Thrilling Tribute to Tango, Tang First Century, coming to Laxson May 13

Chico Performances presents a night of lively, seductive dance with spicy music, as Tango First Century comes to the Laxson Auditorium stage on Wed., May 13, 2009 at 7:30pm.

In a dazzling tribute to tango, Tango First Century presents an intoxicating and sensual fusion of enchanting song, fancy footwork, and musical mastery. Three couples explore the passion of traditional and contemporary tango, gracefully executing the dance’s intricate steps to pulsating beats delivered by an internationally acclaimed septet of musicians. This performance is supported, in part, with funds provided by California Presenters.

Speakers to Address Sustainable Events at Luncheon

California State University, Chico students studying how to hold environmentally aware or sustainable events are hosting experts on the topic at a meeting and lunch Wednesday, May 13, in the BMU, room 210, from 10 a.m. to noon.

The keynote speaker is Wilhelm Wang, business sustainability manager for the British Standards Institution (BSI). BSI is engaged in establishing the first sustainability event standards in the United States and abroad. Recently BSI announced Microsoft Corporation had met initial certification standards set by BSI for sustainable events.
