CSU, Chico Receives Outstanding Marks from Accrediting Body
California State University, Chico has been reaccredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC) for 10 years, an exceptionally long period of reaccreditation that represents a major affirmation of the University and its programs and initiatives.
Official word of the 10-year reaccreditation came in a June 26 letter to CSU, Chico President Paul Zingg from WASC President and Executive Director Ralph Wolff. A team of higher education administrators from five U.S. universities visited CSU, Chico in March on behalf of WASC as part of the final phase of a multi-year reaccreditation process.
“Less than five percent of institutions seeking re-accreditation are reaffirmed for the maximum period of time, that is, 10 years,” said Zingg. “In fact, this period of re-affirmation has become even rarer in recent years as WASC has gone to a two-stage process that makes the reviews more, not less, demanding. But the maximum re-accreditation award means that Chico State has been judged as exemplary at all levels of the review and that we stand as a model for other institutions in our region.”

Collaborating with North State child welfare and mental health agencies, California State University, Chico’s master’s program in social work (MSW) is starting a three-year program this fall based in Redding.
The program is geared for professionals already employed in a social work agency who can work towards an MSW without leaving their jobs to attend school full-time.
Enrollment is full with 32 students signed up from 12 California counties as well as one student from Oregon. Jean Schuldberg, CSU, Chico MSW program director, said the program attracted twice as many applicants as there were places available for students.

Calendar of Events Set for ‘The Soloist,’ Community/CSU, Chico Book in Common
A preliminary calendar of events has been established for this year’s Book in Common (BIC), “The Soloist.” The book, by Steve Lopez, raises issues of the plight of the homeless, the challenges of mental illness and the humanizing role of music and the arts in human life. It follows last year’s book in common, “Three Cups of Tea,” which enjoyed widespread community participation.
“The book is a natural follow-up to ‘Three Cups of Tea’ and Mortenson’s message that a single person can make a difference,” said Brooks Thorlaksson, associate dean of the College of Humanities and Fine Arts at California State University, Chico and a member of the BIC committee. ‘The Soloist’ inspires the readers in a similar way. We have in place many community agencies dedicated to the issues of homelessness and mental illness.
Other important themes of the book—friendship, music and healing, state of newspapers, ethics in journalism, etc. make this a book that connects across campus, and across the county. The North State Symphony will play music that is featured in the book, for example, and The Janet Turner Print Museum has scheduled a print exhibition that deals with music.”

Patrick W. Garman, 44, a senior in Health Services Administration, died at Enloe Hospital on July 25. Patrick married Professor Mike Mazur of the Theatre Department on October 30, 2008, and was very active with the community theater scene, especially the Blue Room.
Patrick was born in Indiana in 1964 and moved to Chico in 2006 when Mazur was hired by CSU, Chico. He had a BA in German Literature from the University of Nebraska and was delighted to move to Chico to be a student again. Patrick was looking forward to a new career after working for many years as a computer programmer for the travel industry. His new interest in health administration was sparked by the work his sister, Diane Howe, does as a nurse with the Sonlight Community Church, which provides medical care to villages in Panama.
There will be a celebration of Patrick’s life on Sept. 12 in the Performing Arts Center, Room 134, at 1 p.m. with a reception afterwards in the PAC Courtyard. The University flag will be lowered Sept. 11 in Patrick’s memory.

Geologist/Environmental Scientist Compiles Data on High-Altitude Wind as Renewable Energy Source
Cristina Archer, faculty in the Department of Geological and Environmental Sciences at California State University, Chico, has collaborated with Ken Caldeira of the Carnegie Institution’s Department of Global Ecology to compile the first-ever global survey of wind energy at high altitudes.
Archer is a world expert in wind power and has done considerable research on mapping the wind resource near the ground. Also a meteorologist, Archer is interested in large-scale flows in the atmosphere. She is the author of a paper on jet streams and how they are slowly shifting toward the earth’s poles. Archer said, “Linking wind power and jet streams was a natural evolution in my research. Ken Caldeira, who was my former supervisor at the Department of Global Ecology, had looked at high-altitude winds in the past and was interested in moving forward with this idea, so we agreed to collaborate on the research.”
The two researchers used 28 years of public data from the National Center for Environmental Prediction and the Department of Energy to assess the potential for wind power. They transformed the data in such a way that they could extract information regarding wind power density at each level in the atmosphere.

Erin Sears and Shelby Hooper’s success on the course was certainly noticed this past season, but Wednesday their success in the classroom was also recognized - the two Chico State women’s golfers were honored Wednesday by being named to the National Golf Coaches Association’s (NGCA) Division II All-American Scholar Golf Team.
A total of 410 women’s collegiate golfers - 65 from the D-II ranks - earned the All-American scholar distinction, meeting the most stringent selection criteria in all of college athletics. Division II student-athletes were required to maintain a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.50 while competing in 66 percent of their school’s regularly scheduled rounds during the season to earn NGCA All-American Scholar Golf Team honors.
Sears, a Business Accounting major, and Hooper, a Business Finance major, were the only California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) golfers from the just-completed 2008-09 season to be included on the national All-American Scholar Golf Team.
