About Teaching and Learning Critical Thinking

Critical thinking ability develops gradually as we learn to organize our world logically and gauge probabilities with increasing success. Instruction in particular subject areas almost always includes an element of teaching critical thinking by example. Our courses in critical thinking examine formally and informally the logics that give structure to thinking itself. In this way, we continue the lifelong project of becoming more aware of our own thinking and the thinking of others.

Applied Critical Thinking and Practical Philosophy

Critical thinking instruction is primarily intended to provide useful skills. Outside the classroom, critical thinking provides the foundation for knowledge-work that makes direct use of philosophy.

Issues and Ideas

Someone once said, if you want to keep your friends, never talk about politics or religion. But in today's world, people with differing ideas about politics, religion, and other important aspects of life meet regularly and need to get along. Critical Thinking can make a real contribution to understanding in a multicultural world, but it presumes a good-faith effort to become informed about the thoughts of others. Some sites we've found useful are arranged by topical focus below, and we update the lists as new sites come to our attention.
If we've left out a site or even a whole category that you think should be included, please click on this link to let us know.
