Joe Hwang's area of specialization is in the history of philosophy,
primarily in early modern philosophy. He has particular interest in the
philosophy of Rene Descartes. He also has strong research interests in
medieval philosophy. Current research interests include Descartes on the
relation between sensory cognition, judgment, and the intellect;
Descartes on mechanism and animal life and cognition; and the place of
teleology in the metaphysics of Descartes, Spinoza, and Leibniz.
