Dr. James Jacob is Professor of Political Science and International Relations, and former Dean of the College of Behavioral and Social Sciences. Dr. Jacob is a Phi Beta Kappa graduate of the University of California at Berkeley, and received his Masters and Ph.D. degrees from Cornell University. He has also studied at Harvard University and the Institut d'Etudes Politiques of the University of Bordeaux in France. He has lived in France for three years and travelled extensively in Europe and the Far East.
Dr. Jacob is an award-winning teacher and scholar. He won a state championship in public speaking at Stanford University in 1968. He was awarded the Outstanding Teacher Award from the College of Liberal Arts at Wright State University in Dayton, Ohio. His manuscript on Basque Nationalism in France won an international competition sponsored by the Sabino Arana Goiri Foundation in Spain for the best manuscript on Basque Nationalism.
Dr. Jacob's primary teaching interests lie in international relations and American Government. He is teaching Political Science 141, Introduction to International Relations, online, and has been immersed in the redesign of that course, using software including WebCT, Horizon Live, Dreamweaver and Webdav. In September, 2003 he was awarded one of Chico State's first awards for Exemplary Online Course Design.
Dr. Jacob's research interests include terrorism (including the psychology of terrorism, the nature of terrorism in Europe and the Middle East, and how terrorism ends), ethnic conflict, language policy, popular culture, and cross-cultural communications. He is the author of two books, Language and National Unity (co-edited with William R. Beer), and Hills of Conflict; Basque Nationalism in France. He is the author of numerous articles in the areas of Basque politics and society, ethnic conflict, language policy, and popular culture.
Dr. Jacob is married to Kathy Austin Jacob. They have four children, Christopher, Amanda, Lisa and Lindsey, and two grand-children, Jack and Ava. They live in Chico, California with their golden retrievers, Maggie and Campbell, and persian cat, Eddie. Dr. Jacob's extracurricular interests include his grandchildren, collecting art and antiques, travel, dining, reading, golf, and motoring in his Triumph TR-6.
