Professor Ostrom has taught at Chico State since 1967. His teaching and research interests are in the field of international relations. He holds a PhD from Claremont Graduate School. Ostrom's overseas experiences include a Fulbright grant year in Singapore, two years teaching in Indonesia, three study tours for professors (to Indonesia, Malaysia, and Vietnam), leading five summer tours in Asia, and more thana 20 research trips to Asia.
His 21st century publications include the following journal articles: "Bali's Tourism Interests: Local Responses to Suharto's Globalization Policies;" "Adapting a Popular Culture Genre to Criticize an Authoritarian Government: Balinese Artists Attack Suharto's Repressive Indonesian Regime;" "Bali's Transition from a Traditional to a Modern Society: Some Op-Art Warnings about the Tradeoffs;" "Indonesia Honors a Political Cartoonist with a Postage Stamp;" "The Utility of Film in Political Science Courses: Teaching The Battle of Algiers ;" "The Changed Function of Political Cartoonists in Indonesia: From Challenging a Repressive Regime to Promoting Democratic Reforms;" and "Active Learning Strategies for Using Cartoons and Internet Research Assignments in Social Studies Courses."
