New Graduate Student Orientation
Come meet other graduate students and receive tips on how to successfully navigate through graduate school. Held the first Friday of each semester in the Bell Memorial Union, room 210 at 2 pm. Call the Office of Graduate and International Programs at 530-898-6880 to verify time and place.
Advising and Registration
Advising is mandatory each semester for all Political Science M. A. students. The Graduate Coordinator is available during regular office hours and by appointment. New students should contact the Graduate Coordinator for advising before registering for courses.
Graduate Assistantships
Each semester, graduate students are selected to serve as Graduate Assistants to assist in teaching the large section of Political Science 55 (American Government: National State and Local). Graduate Assistants are fully responsible for their own discussion sections that meet once a week. They assist with grading and hold office hours. Graduate Assistants also receive graduate credit for POLS 383 (Practicum in Teaching Political Science), which is taken in conjunction with their assistantship, and they receive a stipend.
Internships
Many Political Science M. A. students supplement their graduate work with an internship. If approved by the Graduate Coordinator, M. A. students may receive graduate-level credit for a relevant internship. A number of our graduate students have been awarded California Assembly, Senate, Executive or Judicial Fellowships (highly competitive and prestigious fellowships that are designed to recruit talented people to public service). Some do internships with local, state or national elected officials, with a campaign or a political party. And some students intern in Washington, D.C. or New York.
