Philosophy & Goals

Recent demographic changes affecting California public schools have required a reconsideration of the basic preparation for new teachers, and the specialized upgrade preparation for all teachers who instruct students whose first language is other than English.

It is critical that all teachers meet the needs of diverse students and are sensitive to the linguistic and cultural diversity of all students. In order to meet this challenge, California State University, Chico has designed CLAD Certification for Credentialed Teachers.

The courses for the Crosscultural, Language, and Academic Development (CLAD) certificate will provide the basic knowledge necessary to meet the needs of California's diverse student population. This will include, but not be limited to, the following:

Prerequisites for Admission

  1. Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution and admission into the CSU, Chico Graduate School
  2. Possession of a basic teaching credential

Required Courses For the CLAD Certificate

The Crosscultural, Language, and Academic Development certification is a 12-unit, competency-based sequence of courses leading to a CLAD certificate.

Candidates for this certificate must successfully complete the following course work:

BLMC 518 The Language and Communication Skills of Linguistically and Culturally Diverse Children - 3 units
BLMC 536 Introduction to Multicultural Education -3 units
BLMC 672 Methods and Strategies for Second Language Acquisition and Academic Development - 3 units
BLMC 689 Practicum in Language, Culture, and Academic Development for the Practicing Professional - 3 units
In addition, an experience in learning a second language is required. A number of options are available to meet this requirement. A meeting with an advisor is essential to discuss these options.

The CLAD certificate courses may count toward completion of a master's degree in education.
