Professional Teacher Preparation with Bilingual, Crosscultural, Language and Academic Development (BCLAD) Emphasis

About the Center

The Center for Bilingual/Multicultural Studies faculty work in the Department of Professional Studies in Education(PSED) within the College of Communication and Education.

The PSED mission fosters continuous learning communities dedicated to excellence and equity in education through scholarship and research to develop and deliver exemplary, comprehensive programs that recruit, prepare, and sustain educators' skills in addressing the needs of a diverse set of learners.

The center shares a commitment to quality teaching, particularly for California 's growing diverse student population.

Mission Statement

The Center for Bilingual/Multicultural Studies directs issues of culture and language within the College of Communication and Education. The center prepares professionals to serve California 's english learners (ELs). Cultural and linguistic differences are viewed as assets that provide our society with unlimited resources.

The program is designed to prepare competent BCLAD teachers in the areas of language proficiency, multicultural issues in education, and second language instructional methodology that will enable them to teach all children effectively in the core academic areas.

The 2001 California Language Census Report indicates that 1,511,299 K–12 students enrolled in public schools are identified as English learners (California, 2001). This represents approximately one fourth of the total K–12 enrollment. While this population has increased significantly during the past five years, the supply of qualified bilingual and English language development (ELD) teachers has not grown proportionately to meet the growing instructional needs of this student population.

About the Program

This two-semester, post-baccalaureate professional preparation program prepares candidates to teach in bilingual/crosscultural classrooms and in a variety of educational settings with students from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds.

Multiple subject (grades K–6) and single subject (grades 7–12) candidates come from a variety of academic majors, providing a range of experience and perspectives for all program participants. Prior to completion of the program leading to a teaching credential, candidates must demonstrate proficiency in the target language and knowledge of the target culture.

The program promotes strategies to foster language development, enhances crosscultural understanding, and addresses the educational needs of all students. University-based seminars provide candidates with exposure to program models, legal mandates, instructional practices, and other issues vital in establishing the foundation for later professional leadership.

Candidates participate in bilingual/multicultural classrooms and in classrooms promoting academic language development and conceptual understanding for linguistically diverse students. Opportunities for both observation and instruction prepare candidates for the realities of effective service delivery for English Learners.
