Module 1 - Introducing Service-Learning
Lesson 1 : Definitions of Service-Learning Terms
|
| OVERVIEW |
|
There have been many professional discussions and debates about the definition of service-learning
for elementary, secondary, and higher education. The first lesson will introduce
you to three definitions that provide a foundation for study during this service-learning
course. As you read through the three definitions, consider the critical importance of
learning how to engage students as community members in kindergarten through grade 12 while
they are simultaneously acquiring academic skills, knowledge, and useful skills.
You will also be asked to reflect upon your own learning experiences by keeping a journal.
As you study and read about the service-learning projects initiated by other teacher
candidates, you will learn that service-learning is meant to enhance a sense of social
responsibility and civic awareness while providing an opportunity to apply academic
learning. Complete the two activities of Lesson 1.
