Module 1 - Introducing Service-Learning

Lesson 4: Service-Learning Content Standards for K-12 Education

 OVERVIEW
This lesson presents student demonstrations of the key elements of service-learning as recommended by the California Department of Education. These recommendations are based upon a core premise for learning that all students should have access to the core academic curriculum and to strategies that deliver content in "thinking-meaning centered" experiences (California Elementary Task Force Report, It's Elementary, 1985).

 COMPETENCIES
After completing this lesson, you will be able to:
  1. Understand and discuss the importance of the key elements of service-learning recommended by the California State Department of Education.
  2. Identify examples of service-learning that demonstrate learning in each of the five elements.
