Lesson 7: Reflection and Assessment in Service-Learning

 OVERVIEW
This lesson discusses the key roles of reflection and assessment in service-learning.

Reflection activity provides an opportunity for students to consider aspects of their service-learning experiences and develop new understandings. Students need to consider what they have learning about themselves through the service experiences. They should also be encouraged to examine what impact their project had on the community being served and in what ways they have become more aware of or sensitive to the perspective of others.

Assessment is essential for determining what students have learned. It also provides important information to the teacher for making improvements in instruction and in developing service-learning projects. Student self-assessment is an important part of assessing student learning and program impact.

 COMPETENCIES
After completing this lesson, you will be able to:
  1. Discuss the importance of reflective activity in a service-learning project.
  2. Identify several types of reflective activity.
  3. Differentiate between reflection and assessment.
  4. Identify assessment tools that are appropriate for service-learning.

  • Activity 1: Examine several reflection activities, design a reflection activity and complete a journal entry based upon reading the article, Service-Learning: An Education Strategy for Preventing School Violence (see Toolbox).
