In 1975, seven students met on the third floor of Whitney residence hall and embarked on a friendship that has lasted twenty-five years. To celebrate this important anniversary, they took a cruise to Mexico in January.
All the women were child development or liberal studies majors at CSU, Chico, and all have remained in education. Connie (Fischer) Stark is principal of Westport Elementary School in Modesto, California; Libby (Kennedy) Brown teaches grades three and four at Evergreen Academy in Bothell, Washington; Jennifer (Grindy) Hermon teaches kindergarten and first grade at Tremont Elementary School in Dixon, California; Carol (Denton) Smith teaches high school algebra at Hanford High School in Hanford, California; Teresa Fasola is a seventh-grade English/social studies CORE teacher at Toyon Middle School in Valley Springs, California; Marilyn (Aiello) Moore is a K-3 reading specialist at Ambrosini Elementary School in Fortuna, California; and Mary Grech is a second-grade teacher at Apple Blossom Elementary School in Sebastopol, California (shown in order from left to right in the photo above, taken on their Mexican cruise). While in Whitney Hall, the women joined a third-floor softball team named the Un-nuns, from which they still have their T-shirts. They shared many classes together and loved the Chico atmosphere, says Fasola. After leaving Whitney Hall, the women moved together to a home on Ivy Street. After graduation, they cemented their friendship by meeting twice a year for vacations. The alums and their families have shared a Humboldt County cabin on the Bear River for several summers; they have taken Christmas shopping trips and girls only trips to the Sonoma Mission Inn; and several have been to two Olympics together, most recently in Atlanta. They are avid sports fans, says Fasola. We love Chico, says Fasola, and feel so grateful for the education we received and the friendships we made there.
