David DuBose (B.A., Agriculture, 62) has retired from his 34-year career as a natural resources instructor at Shasta College. He offers tours of edible plants and wildflowers on his 300-acre ranch in Parkville, 20 miles from Redding, California. Dubose and his wife, Sandy, have three grown children. Dennis OConnell (B.A., Business Administration, 68) has been named chair of the board of directors for Sutter Health, a Northern California health care network. A Marin County businessman and civic leader, he has served on the board since 1996 and is also an investor in businesses ranging from construction to manufacturing. Tom Ogren (B.A., Sociology, 69) wrote a book titled Allergy-Free Gardening. He has owned several nurseries and a dairy farm, and taught for 23 years at the California Youth Authority. Center this past spring. Roger Lucas (B.A, Psychology, 71) is vice president for human resources in the home office of Wausau Insurance. He joined Wausau in their San Francisco office in 1973, advancing from claims adjuster to assistant vice president for the Customer Services Business Center. Judy Robertson (B.A., American Studies, 71) was an inductee in the 1999 Glenn County Educators Hall of Fame for her 19 years of aiding and teaching at Lake School, a small school near Orland, California. She left the classroom in 1997 but continues to serve as coordinator of special programs. Robertson is married to Ron Brillhart. Randy Shell (B.S., Business Administration, 71) has been appointed senior vice president and chief financial officer of Tehama Bank in Chico. Robert Borchard (B.A., Sociology, 73) ran for supervisor in District 4 of Mariposa County, California, in the spring 2000 elections. He has been active in the California State Mining and Mineral Exhibit Association, Little League, John C. Gail (Ibarreta) Sherman (B.A., Liberal Studies, 74) is the first principal of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic School in Sacramento, California. She had been principal of St. Robert School for seven years and a teacher for the Diocese 14 years prior to that. She lives with her husband, John, in Sacramento. They have two sons attending Jesuit High School. Larry Tosta (B.S., Agriculture, 74) is the principal of Galt High School. He taught agriculture there for 19 years before becoming an administrator at the continuation high school in Galt, California. James F. Wells (B.S., Business Administration, 74) is the corporate officer, senior vice presidentÐregional managing director of Acordia Inc. He has served on insurance advisory councils and currently chairs the Cystic Fibrosis Advisory Board. Denise Sloan (B.A., Art, 75) is the executive director of Lake Tahoes film festival 2000. She coordinates community sponsors, fundraising, and events with the American Film Institute. She has been the entertainment editor of the Tahoe Daily Tribune for 13 years and serves as chair of the Lake Tahoe Special Events Coalition. Richard C. Farley (B.S., Agricultural Business, 76) is vice president, business development officer of Bank of the West in Walnut Creek, California. He was vice president of commercial loans for North State National Bank in Chico before joining Butte Community Bank in Chico as agricultural loan officer. Scott D. Johnson (B.A., Physical Education Teaching, 76) was an inductee in the 1999 Glenn County Educators Hall of Fame for his 11 years as teacher, coach, athletic director, and student activities director at Hamilton High School. Johnson is now a P.E. teacher and coach at his alma mater, Oroville High School. He and his wife, Janet, reside in Oroville with their three children. William D. Linebarger (M.A., Social Sciences, 76) is the new principal at Colusa Alternative High School. He was a former principal of Los Molinos Elementary, 1994Ð99, and vice principal at Palermo Elementary, 1990Ð94, before taking on his new post in Colusa, California. Rowland Reeves (B.A., Political Science, 76 ) is a high school business teacher at Luther Burbank High School in Sacramento, California. He was a candidate for the mayor of Sacramento in the spring 2000 elections. He and his wife, Cindy, have two sons and live in Natomas. Riley Swift (M.A., Biology, 77) is president of Wildlands Inc., based in Citrus Heights, California. Wildlands Inc. is one of the nations first entrepreneurial organizations to establish and manage large tracts of natural land for wildlife habitat design, restoration, and management. Kathy Clark (B.A., Recreation Administration, 78) has been running Paradise Books since February 1999. She entered the Navy when she was 18 and became a weather forecaster who briefed pilots, conducted security watches, and trained others in meteorology. In 1994, she got a job with the National Weather Service. After two years, she decided to move back to Northern California with her two daughters. Jeff Hahn (B.S., Agronomy, 78) has been promoted to regional director of operations for Extended Stay America Inc. He joined Extended Stay America in 1997 as a district manager. His new area covers eight districts and 39 hotels in five western states. Dan Moffat (B.S., Financial Management, 78) is founder of New Edge Networks on Columbia House Boulevard in Vancouver, Washington. He completed Canadas Ironman Triathlon in August 1999. He and his wife, Jane, have three children. Doug Sheehy (B.S., Agriculture, 78) teaches at Lassen Community College and High Desert State Prison. He participates in the Artists in Schools program for Lassen and Plumas Counties. Originally playing with brother David as the Sheehy Brother Band, he formed his own band, Go Dog Go, in Susanville, California. as a route driver and has been a supervisor for the past 10 years. Bush
promotes Bien Padres chip products from San Diego to Seattle. Rosa Bettencourt (B.A., Social Work, 80) was featured in the Oct. 17, 1999, Marysville Appeal-Democrat for her involvement at the Yuba City Racquet & Health Club. She has been employed in several professional career positions since her graduation and volunteers in physical disability-related activities. Bettencourt lives in Gridley, California. Dana Dillon (B.A., Liberal Studies, 81) has been teaching at Weed Elementary School in Weed, California, since 1983. She is also the teachers union representative to the California Teachers Association and a CTA representative to the National Education Association. Together, she represents 19,000 California teachers to the national union organization. She also returned to Chico State this spring to earn a library credential. Denise Moran-Snider (B.A., Psychology, 81) is the social services and training coordinator for Northern California Child Development Inc. in Red Bluff, California. She has been an adjunct professor at Chico State and Shasta College and is working toward a counseling credential. Christine Brose-Kerr (B.A., Music, 83) began teaching through the Paradise Recreation and Park District about six years ago. She is now a voice teacher for Butte College at Paradise High School and also teaches private lessons. Lynn Kennedy (B.A. , Recreation Administration, 85) has
been the recreation therapist at Paradise Health Care for the past four
years. After graduation, she received her certification as Sam Hausfather (M.A., Education, 88) is assistant dean for graduate studies of Berry Colleges Charter School of Education and Human Sciences. He joined the Berry faculty in 1991 after teaching in elementary schools in California, New York, Washington, and Oregon. He lives with his wife and two children on the Berry campus in Mount Berry, Georgia. Jeff Newman (B.S., Computer Science, 88) is creator and owner of Drawing Hands Creations. The store specializes in odd-size shoes. Chris Dunn (B.A., Broadcasting, 90) is the chief meteorologist at Channel 2 News in Salt Lake City, Utah. Rich Lyon (B.A., Physical Education, 90) was hired in September 1999 as the supervisor of the Del Norte County Parks and Recreation Department. Prior to his new job of arranging activities for Crescent City, he was a teacher, coach, and activities director of an elder care center in Eureka. Paul Mabie (B.S., Dietetics and Food Administration, 90) took second place for his brown ale at the 1999 California State Fair in Sacramento, California. Earlier that year, he took first place for his Belgian Strong Ale at the Silver Dollar Fair in Chico. He has been brewing beer for five years. Mabie is the assistant cook manager for Chico Unified School District. Erik Duncan (B.S., Business Administration, 91) is the general manager at Payless Building Supply in Susanville, California. Curtis Rose (B.S., Business Administration, 91 ) owns and operates a hot springs spa in Surprise Valley, outside Cedarville, California, along Highway 299. He and his wife, Kimberly, have improved and enlarged the suites, each with its own kitchen and private spa. They are also partners in Western Utilities Inc., an international tunneling company. David N. Buffington (B.A., Political Science, 92) joined the law firm of Schander Harrison Segal & Lewis in their San Francisco office. His practice area is product liability, and business and employment litigation. David Pompa (B.S., Biological Sciences, 92) recently finished residency training in internal medicine at UC San Diego and is receiving subspecialty training in gastroenterology. Lisa Rettig (B.S., Business Administration, 92) is the manager of human resources for Central Contra Costa Transit Authority. Nasser Dean (B.A., Political Science, 93) is the executive director of the USDA/Farm Service Agency in the Riverside-San Diego County Office. His wife is an attorney. They live in Palm Desert, California. Erin Brown-Espinoza (M.A., Construction Management, 94) has been appointed to the Red Bluff City Planning Commission. Prior to this post, she served as a historic building renovation consultant for the State Theater and Kraft Library projects in Red Bluff, California. Kyle Wiley Pickett (M.A., Choral Conducting, 94) is the musical director and conductor of the Chico Symphony Orchestra. Previously he was conductor and musical director of the Redding Symphony Orchestra. Last year, he was a guest conductor of the Juneau Symphony in Alaska while employed as the music director/conductor and vocal coach for the Rogue Music Theater in Grants Pass, Oregon. In 1998, he married Alice Wiley. She is interested in drama and received a fellowship to Actors Conservatory Theatre in San Francisco in 1999. Lisa Rossi (B.A., Journalism, 95) is managing the media relations for Macys West, a division of Federated Stores. Sanchez (B.S., Physical Science, 96) is a communications officer and operations officer for the Navys Helicopter Anti-Submarine Squadron (Light) 43. While based in San Diego, he commented on his squadron, which deploys helicopters aboard Navy warships: I enjoy performing missions and real-world operations that have a direct reflection on our nations security and well-being. Wendy Cotton (B.S., Agriculture, 97) took the challenge of the agility test in her quest to be a firefighter in Salinas, California. She worked in a veterinary hospital before her present jobs as a construction worker and on-call firefighter. Jason Meath (B.S., Health Science, 97) joined the Stockton office of Morgan Stanley Dean Witter as a financial adviser. They reside in St. Louis, Missouri. Jan Kathryn Roberts (B.A., Music, 82) married Thomas Charles Byron Haydon on June 12, 1999, in Yuba City, California. After graduation, she earned a masters degree in music from USC. She now teaches music in the Rocklin Unified School District. He is a sales representative for the Henry Wine Group. David Bassetti (B.A., Journalism,88) married Regina Pedroza in October 1999 at the San Juan Bautista Mission. He is an agriculture field supervisor at Neil Bassetti Farms; she is employed at the City of Monterey. Matt Solano (B.S., Civil Engineering, 98) married Kimberly Brazie on Aug. 5 in Yreka, California. He is a civil engineer with the California Department of Transportation and co-owner of Brothers Unlimited Mobile DJ Service. She is completing her degree in liberal studies while employed as a literacy aid at Little Chico Creek Elementary School in Chico. Karen Anne Berthiaume (B.A., Liberal Studies, 99) and Sullivan Joseph Bookataub III (B.S., Biology, 96), both of Chico, married Sept. 25, 1999. She is working at Colusa Unified School District, and he is employed by MRI Sales Consultants of Chico. Elizabeth Day (B.A., Sociology, 99) married Dade Smith on Aug. 21, 1999, at Crystal Bay, North Lake Tahoe. She is employed at the Glenn County HRA, and he works for the Forest Service. Sally Hasty (B.S., Business Administration, 99) married Sean Burgess on Nov. 20, 1999. She is a sales representative for pharmaceuticals, and he is completing his marketing degree at Chico State. They live in Carlsbad, California. Michael William Johnson (B.A., Psychology, 99) married Lynette Ortiz on Nov. 7, 1999, in Chico. He is a paraprofessional in special education for Butte County Schools, and she is a medical transcriptionist. Marie Carmon (B.S., Health Science, 00) married Matthew Aylworth on Jan. 4 in the LDS Oakland Temple. John S. Corbin (B.A., Education, 38) died Jan. 13 in Roseville,
California, at the age of 87. As the superintendent of the Robla School
District from 1948 to 1956, he was a member of the development team for
establishing Sacramento State. Corbin was later the superintendent of
the Tahoe-Truckee Unified School District for 15 years. He leaves a wife,
Dorothy; a son, Larry of Granite Bay; daughters Kay Atchison of Auburn
and Carol Brush of Roseville; eight grandchildren, five great-grandchildren,
and two great-great-grandchildren. Jean Starkey (B.A., Economics, 43) died Dec. 27, 1999, at the age of 77. She was a partner in J.G. Brattan Co., a family farm and prune drying business in Butte County. Starkey was a member of Our Divine Savior Church, Omega Nu Sorority, Soroptimists Club, Childrens Home Society, and Butte Creek Country Club. Her survivors include two daughters, Carlin Naify of Sacramento and Susan Henneberg of Reno; a son, Joseph, of Chico; and eight grandchildren. Sylvan D. Wilson (B.A., Education, 49) died Feb. 20 in Chico
of natural causes. He was 74. Wilson taught at Gridley Elementary School
District for seven years and then became principal of Woodrow Wilson School
in Gridley, California, for 30 years. He retired in 1986. He is survived
by wife Jackie of Gridley; daughter Ann of Carson City, Nevada; and two
grandchildren. Lyle Olsen (B.A., Physical Education, 51) died Jan. 27 in Tennessee of prostate cancer. He was 70. He was known as a standout athlete at Chico State. He later played Class AAA baseball in the Brooklyn Dodgers organization. He left baseball to earn a doctorate. Olsen was a professor of physical education at San Diego State University and coached baseball there from 1965 to 1971. He retired in 1989, moved to Tennessee, and became an adjunct professor of English at East Tennessee State University. He leaves his wife, Phyllis Anne; three sons, Erik of Maui, Hawaii, Nels of Mountain View, Hawaii, and Leif of Carlsbad, California; and four grandchildren. Robert Ellis (B.A., Education, 52) died Sept. 30, 1999, in Red Bluff, California. He was 73. He was a teacher at Sutter Union High School for five years and an art teacher at Red Bluff Union High School for 29 years. Ellis retired in 1987. He is survived by wife Vera, son James of Red Bluff, and daughter Rebecca Dorsey of Fort Bragg. David Edwin Williams (B.S., Business Administration, 53) died Feb. 28 in Willows. He served on the Tehama-Colusa Canal board and founded the Thomas Creek Water District. Williams ranched with his father from 1953 to 1975, then partnered with his son, Bob, in 1980. He is survived by wife Ramona of Corning, sons David Charles of Orland and Robert Arden of Corning, and four grandchildren. Dorothy A. Graf (B.A., Education, 58) died Dec. 29, 1999,
in her home in Chico. She was 68. Graf taught in Chico elementary schools
for 30 years. Her love of learning continued after retirementÑshe stayed
active in the Prime Timers, volunteered at the Chico Art Center, and attended
the Shakespeare Festival in Ashland, Oregon. She is survived by husband
Cecil and daughter Christine of Chico. Frank Gore (B.S., Agriculture Business, 65) of Durham, California,
died Feb. 2. He was 56. He spent a lifetime as the partner in Gus Gore
and Sons Construction with brothers Nick and Harv, and father Gus. Gore
was a master carpenter and contributed to the construction of the Durham
Park Picnic Pavilion and Durham Memorial Hall parking lot. He leaves wife
Jill; two sons, David of Durham and Dennis of Chico; two daughters, Brisa
Hanna of Santa Cruz and Lily Hanna of Spain; and a grandson. Donald H. Heffren (B.S., Agriculture, 72) died Dec. 26, 1999, at Bucks Lake, California, in a snowmobiling accident. He was 50. Heffren was ranch manager of the Gorrill Ranch for 25 years. He was active in the farm community as a member of the Western Canal Water District, Sutter Basin Water Association, Butte Creek Watershed Conservancy, and Rice Milling Association as well as community soccer clubs, snowmobile clubs, and the Chico Chamber of Commerce. He is survived by his wife, Cindy, and two sons, Frank of Salinas and Joel of Sonoma. Bruce Lennart Besnard (B.A., Mathematics, 74) died Jan. 28 at the age of 47 in Mammoth, California. He practiced optometry in Sacramento, opening a private practice in Chico in 1988. He leaves his wife, Deborah, and a son, Drew. Jackie Faris-Rees (B.A., History, 77) died April 22 at home
in Chico of cancer. She was 46. As an undergraduate, Faris-Rees served
on the executive board of the California State Student Association and
was president of the Associated Students. She was active in several civic
groups, including The Esplanade League, Chamber of Commerce, PTA, and
Butte Community Action Agency. She also served eight years on the Chico
Unified School District school board. She leaves her husband of 23 years,
Rick Rees, daughter Alexandra, and son Robert.
Roger Dillon (B.S., Accounting, 83; B.S., Business Administration, 84) of Magalia, California, died Nov. 23, 1999, in his home. He was 68. Dillon was in the Navy for more than three decades and taught electronics at Moffett Field in Mountain View for five years. His wife, Naomi, died in 1988. He leaves a daughter, Rae Kirk of Magalia. Todd Richard Gregori (B.A., History, 83) died Dec. 5, 1999, in Concord, California. He was 42. Gregori was a photographer for Contra Costa, a weekly magazine, and a member of New Lift, On-Track, and Motor Sports Press Association. He is survived by his mother, Alice Sonnenberg Gregori of Danville, California, and his father, Richard Gregori of Palm Desert. Charles Fred Heart (M.A., Public Administration, 83) died Feb. 2 in Baker City, Oregon. He was 66. Heart was a California Highway Patrol officer from 1957 until retirement in 1986. He leaves wife Jacquie, son Leigh of Baker City, daughter Torie, and grandson Carson Kline of Anchorage, Alaska. Judy Lee Eggers (B.S., Nursing, 84) died April 3 in Chico. She was 51. Eggers was a school nurse in Biggs and Durham school districts. As an active member of several service groups in Gridley, California, she wrote the Build a Better Community project emphasizing CPR. She is survived by her husband of 31 years, Ron, and sons Chris and Brian, both of Gridley, and Jimmie of Yuba City. Janet Lee Miller (B.S., Nursing, 84) died Dec.12, 1999,
in Chico. She was 45. Miller worked at Enloe Medical Center and was a
former director of Enloe Hospice. She is survived by her husband, Paul;
stepfather, Bruce Philp, and mother, Eleanor Philp, both of Fort Bragg.
Todd Christian Fields (B.S., Business Administration, 90) died on his 33rd birthday on Oct. 11, 1999, of Lou Gehrigs disease. Fields graduated from South Tahoe High School and, while attending Chico State, was the pitcher for the Wildcat baseball team. He was an account representative for Wallace Computer Services in San Ramon after graduation. He is survived by wife Debby of Redwood Valley and son Tyler. To honor his devotion to baseball, South Tahoe Babe Ruth Field and South Tahoe Middle School Field were renamed Todd Fields. Shaun Stubblefield (B.S., Biology, 96) died in March at a concert in Calistoga, California. He was 36. Stubblefield lived in Healdsburg with his brother and had been freelancing in biochemistry for wineries in Sonoma County. Robert Russell Erving (M.A., Geography, 97) died March 5
in a skiing accident near Whitefish, Montana. He was 33. Erving attended
UC Santa Barbara and lived in Redwood City while working at Earth Metrics.
He is survived by his mother, Susan Erving of Menlo Park; his father,
Robert Erving of Bainbridge, Washington; and sister Audrey Licari of Larkspur,
California.
