’m so pleased to join Chico’s university community as the new editor of Chico Statements. As an alum of a California State University, I know what these schools have to offer: accessibility, relatively small class size, and an excellent education at a great price. But at Cal State Hayward, a “commuter” campus, I missed out on one thing that CSU, Chico offers in abundance: a sense of community.

At Chico State, I feel a difference—a community intimately connected to this place. When I walk across campus, I see students studying on the lawns and professors chatting with students after class, and people I’ve met greet me warmly. The Mediterranean-style brick buildings at the core of the campus and the lush landscaping make an inviting backdrop for reading under the trees or daydreaming next to meandering Big Chico Creek.

That sense of place also extends beyond campus to Bidwell Park, the Sacramento River, Butte Creek, and the Feather River Canyon. As part of my research for the Adventure Outings article, I embarked on my first whitewater experience on the Feather River. The expertise and positive attitude of the Adventure Outings staff quickly put me at ease. Plus, the student participants made sure I didn’t feel left out. I not only ended the day exhilarated and unscathed, but also feeling more like part of the campus community.

This issue of Chico Statements is full of adventures—of all sorts. Remember how exciting the ’60s and ’70s were? Even if you are too young to remember those turbulent times, you’ll enjoy reading about Chico’s decade of student activism.

P.E. classes can be an adventure, too, especially for kids who aren’t skilled athletes, but being picked last for a team or running laps as punishment is no way to encourage lifelong physical fitness. The grassroots advocacy group CASPER, started by a Chico State professor, is trying to eliminate such inappropriate practices.

We have e-ventures in this issue as well. In this on-line-driven world, we’re buying everything from CDs to cars on the Web. So it’s not surprising that e-commerce is changing the face of education. See how Chico State is preparing its students for jobs in the expanding e-commerce industry.

As I begin this new adventure as Chico Statements’ editor, I’m especially eager to hear from you. What interests you? How can we shape the magazine to meet your needs, and to sustain and deepen your connection with Chico State? I welcome your feedback to this issue and suggestions for future issues. And, as always, we want to hear about you—updates on your career and personal achievements, as well as reminiscences about Chico State.
