Two Trustee Awards to Chico

Frederick Ryan |
CSU, Chicos Robert Cottrell, professor of history, and Frederick
Ryan, vice provost for Information Resources, received two of the five
Wang Family Excellence Awards given in the California State University
system for 2000.
A CSU, Chico professor since 1984, Cottrell has been recognized by students
and colleagues for outstanding teaching, and he is also a prolific writer
and scholar. Of Ryan, President Manuel A. Esteban said, Ryans
leadership and direction have been key to moving this university into
the information age.
CSU trustee Stanley T. Wang established the Wang Family Excellence Award
in 1998 to recognize CSU faculty and administrators for extraordinary
accomplishments. The recipients are given a $20,000 stipend.
Dean Joins CSU, Chico

Jeanne L. Thomas |
On August 1, Jeanne L. Thomas
became the new dean of the College of Behavioral and Social Sciences.
Previously, Thomas was the dean of the College of Health and Human Services
at Southwest Missouri State University for four years and worked at the
University of Wisconsin-Parkside for fifteen years. She received her Ph.D.
in developmental psychology from West Virginia University in 1982 and
has published extensively on issues related to gender and aging.
Steel Bridge Team Wins Nationals
CSU, Chico civil engineering students dominated the National Steel Bridge
Competition held at Texas A&M in May, competing against the best forty-three
schools from twenty different regions across the nation.
The team placed first in economy, first in efficiency, second in aggregate
deflection, third in weight, and ninth in construction speed; the final
result was a score more than double that of the second place team. This
was the fourth year the team has advanced to the nationals.
Shalala Visits Chico

Donna E. Shalala |
As one of the highlights of Founders Week 2000 in April, Donna E. Shalala,
secretary of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, spoke to
a capacity crowd in Harlen Adams Theatre on issues concerning Americas
Health Care in the New Millennium.
Since 1993, Shalala has led administration efforts to reform the nations
welfare system and improve health care while containing costs. She discussed
HMOs, medical marijuana, and the ethics of medical research.
New Major Links Campuses
CSU, Chico, San Diego State University, and San Francisco State University
have joined forces to create the Consortial Major in Jewish Studies. They
will share course offerings that are particular to individual campuses,
collaborate in seeking funding, and share classes on the Internet.
By pooling courses, students, and academic resources, the consortium
hopes to provide students with a wide, varied, and integrated program.

Nursing Receives Grant
The School of Nursing has received a $100,000 grant award from Sacramento-based
Sierra Health Foundation to create a scholarship program for nursing students
in Northern California. Eight nursing students will be chosen on merit
over the next six years to receive scholarships of $2,500 per semester
for five semesters.
