For the past three years, Wildcat Pride, Chico State’s student spirit organization, has been gathering steam.

“Wildcat Pride’s primary goal is to promote intercollegiate athletics and get involvement from a variety of constituencies on campus to participate and become wild and crazy fans of Chico State athletics,” says Charles “C.C.” Carter, director of development for intercollegiate athletics. “It’s an opportunity to create a real campus spirit that’s been absent from the university.”

Members of Wildcat Pride cheer on all eleven CSU, Chico intercollegiate athletic teams at selected home contests. Mascots Slash and Ms. Kitty help lead the cheers and get people to sit in the Cage, a section in the stands set aside for rowdy cheering.

Carter, who this year took over running the program, notes that Wildcat Pride is about more than just creating fun and excitement during athletic eventsÑit offers students opportunities to get involved in running the program itself. About twenty-five students work in public relations and sports marketing and promotion. Plans for the upcoming year include a cheering section for parents called the Cubs Cage and an outreach program in the residence halls.

During athletic events, anywhere from 200 to 500 students fill the Cage, or put on skits and dance during timeouts. A few of last year’s outstanding events were Midnight Madness, which celebrates the first practice of the winter season, starting at 12:01 a.m.; Break the Record Night, where fans try to beat game attendance records; and the Baseball Tailgate Party.

Carter points out that while other campuses have more established spirit organizations than Chico State, in February a men’s basketball game against UC Davis showed that Wildcat Pride is definitely on its way. “They beat us by 40 points at Davis three days earlier, and they came to our home court, and we beat them by 20,” recalls Carter. “It was really exciting because we had a part in that.”
