James Abbay, former custodian, died on Dec. 3, 1999, in Chico. He was 72. Abbay had worked as a machinist for twenty-eight years at Diamond Match before joining the custodial staff at CSU, Chico for twenty-two years.

Professor emeritus of art Robert M. Bain died May 20 in Chico. He was 87. He brought expertise in sculpture, drawing, and art appreciation to the art education program when he joined Chico State in 1956. Bain served as building coordinator for the university for seven years and as adviser to the Chico Creative Arts Center. He retired in 1977.

 
Kenneth Bensel xx
Former farm manager and professor Kenneth Bensel died of cancer at his home in Chico Jan. 30. He was 77. Bensel was the first manager of the University Farm in 1956. He joined the faculty in 1961, teaching agronomy and assisting hundreds of students through his work with 4-H and FFA. In 1979, he entered the early retirement program and became an emeritus faculty member in 1983.

 
xx Ernest Herbert Campbell
Ernest Herbert Campbell, retired education professor, died Dec. 21, 1999, in Chico. He was 86. Campbell began his teaching career in a one-room schoolhouse in Missouri, later becoming a high school principal and superintendent of schools. He came to Chico State in 1953, teaching in the Department of Education. He retired in 1978 but stayed active in church and on boards for Enloe Hospital and the Family Service Association.

Retired Testing Office secretary Wuanita Demetras died in Chico Jan. 18. She was 73. Demetras was hired in 1968 and helped thousands of students get information about the university’s testing programs. She assisted in the Student Evaluation of Faculty process and coordinated the ASSIST class test scoring for the ten years she worked on campus. She retired in December 1978.

 
Debbie Campbell Dennison xx
Debbie Campbell Dennison, computer software specialist, died Jan. 6 due to complications from Wegener’s granulomatosis. She was 45. Dennison attended CSU, Chico in 1972 and was hired as a student assistant in the Word Processing Center. After receiving her B.A. in sociology in 1976, she was hired as a staff member. In 1992, Dennison joined Computing Services, which expanded into the renamed User Services, where Debbie worked until her retirement in 1997 due to her illness.

Helen Downie died Feb. 28 in Paradise, California. She was 81. She worked in the CSU, Chico business office for more than twenty-five years.

 
xx Robert Fredenburg
Former interim president of the university and professor Robert Fredenburg died April 8 in Chico. He was 78. Fredenburg joined the physical sciences faculty in 1959, serving as chair during part of his ten years there. From 1969 to 1982, he had several administrative roles, including director of international programs, dean for undergraduate education, and associate vice president for academic affairs. He was appointed interim president of the university in 1979, stepping in to replace outgoing president Stanford Cazier.

Fidelis Hampton, former secretary to two CSU, Chico presidents, died April 4 in Reno. She was 88. Originally from Texas, Hampton came to work at Chico State in November 1947. For nineteen years, she served as secretary to the president: first Aymer J. Hamilton, then Glenn Kendall. In 1966, she became a payroll officer, a position she held until her retirement in July 1974.

 
Terry T. Masuda xx
Professor emeritus of health sciences Terry T. Masuda died Feb. 23 in Chico. He was 80. Masuda earned his master’s degree and doctorate in public health, and taught at Sacramento State University and the University of Hawaii before coming to Chico. He accepted a full professorship at Chico State in 1969, where he taught for ten years.

Nicholas Nagy-Talavera, professor emeritus of history, died Jan. 23. He was 70. He was born in Budapest and attended one year at the University of Vienna. Starting in 1949, he spent seven years in Soviet labor camps. He completed his education at UC Berkeley. Nagy-Talavera taught Russian and Eastern European history in the CSU, Chico history department from 1967 until he retired in 1991. He is author of Nicolae Iorga: A Biography and The Green Shirts and the Others: A History of Fascism in Hungary and Rumania.

 
xx Neil M. Ruge
Neil M. Ruge, professor emeritus of business, died in Chico March 9 of Parkinson’s disease. He was 86. He attended school at the California Institute of Technology, Stanford University, Boalt Hall Law School at UC Berkeley, and Harvard Graduate School of Business Administration. Ruge was a member of the California Bar Association and the bar of the U.S. Supreme Court. He was an adjudicator for the Veteran’s Administration and a commissioned officer in the U.S. Foreign Service. Ruge retired from the Foreign Service as first secretary of embassy in 1968 and became a professor of general contract law at Chico State in 1969. He was the adviser for the professional business fraternity Delta Sigma Pi and instrumental in developing the department’s business law curriculum. He retired from CSU, Chico in 1980.
