1930s
BERNARD O'NEILL (Elementary Teaching Certificate,
'29; A.B., Education, '31; Junior High Credential, '36) died Feb.
13 in Chico. He was 94. O'Neill served in the U.S. Navy during World
War II and retired from teaching after 40 years. He was a member
of the California Retired Teachers Association, the CSU, Chico Alumni
Association, and was active with the Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, and
Oroville YMCA. Survivors include his wife of 68 years, Thelma, and
his brother, Norman.
EVELYN MOREHEAD (B.A., Education, Credential,
'38) died Dec. 23 at the age of 84. Morehead was a past president
of the Chico Alumni Board, life and charter member of the Enloe
Auxiliary, and was active in various other community groups. She
is survived by her daughters, April, Mary, Jamie, Terry, and Denice;
sister, Elinor; 11 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.
1940s
BEVERLY NICHOLS (B.A., Education, Credential,
'40) died Dec. 20 at her home in Valdosta, Georgia. In 1942, Nichols
married her college sweetheart, George, who preceded her in death.
Her daughters, Bette Jean and Dean, as well as five grandchildren,
survive her.
1950s
AUDREY POWERS (B.A., Education, Credential, '50)
died March 16 at a local hospital. She was 73. Powers taught first
and second grades in Vina, California. She is survived by her husband
of 53 years, Duane; sons, Mark, Thomas, and Daniel; daughter, Ann
Marie; two sisters, Frances and Joan; and nine grandchildren.
ROBERT LANDERMAN (B.A., Education, Credential,
'51; M.A., Elementary School Administration, '60) died March 29
in Joliet, Illinois, at the age of 83. Landerman was a teacher,
tutor, principal, and administrator. He served in the Naval Air
Corps from 1941 to 1942 and was active in his local church. His
wife, Ritta, preceded him in death. Survivors include his sons,
Norman, Richard, Robert, Fred, James, Paul, Elvan, and Joseph; brother,
Carlof; 36 grandchildren; and many great-grandchildren.
NORMAN ABRAHAM (B.A., Life Science, '53; Credential,
M.A., Biology, '54) died of lung cancer Feb. 23 at his home in Paradise,
California. He was 79. Abraham began his career as a teacher at
Los Molinos High School before becoming head of the science department
for Yuba City High School. He was a textbook author for Rand McNally
and was a member of various science teachers organizations. His
second wife, Marilyn; daughters, Katherine, Becky, Frances, and
Valerie; five grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren survive
him.
DEARESTEEN LANGDON (B.A., Home Economics, '54)
died Jan. 26 at the age of 69 after a battle with cancer. Langdon
received her master's degree from San Jose State University and
taught at Cerritos Community College until her retirement in 1992,
when she became a substitute teacher for Chico Unified School District.
She is survived by her husband of 35 years, Chip; and sisters, Helen
and Dorothy.
MARGARET BAUER (A.B., Homemaking Credential,
'57; Credential, '61; M.A., Social Science, '70) died April 20.
She was 87. Bauer taught at Los Molinos High School for more than
20 years and, with her husband, founded the Tehama County Museum.
Her husband, Merrill, preceded her in death in 1986. Her son, Chris;
brother, Richard; four grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren
survive her.
CHARLES MORGAN (attended '55'58, Agriculture)
died Jan. 13 from complications of lung cancer. He was 70. Morgan
served in the U.S. Army and was stationed in Austria. He is survived
by his wife of 45 years, Jean; son, Lee; daughters, Jeri, Julie,
and Ginger; and 12 grandchildren.
1960s
ROBERT DELERAY (B.A., Recreation and Youth Leadership,
'61; Credential, '63; M.A., Education, '70) died June 14 at the
age of 64. Deleray taught 35 years in the Chico Unified School District,
9 years at Citrus Elementary School, and 26 years at Chico Junior
High School, retiring in 1998. Survivors include his wife, Verna;
children, Noreen, Doug, and Donald; brother, Art; and nine grandchildren.
KENNETH HARRIS (B.A., Biology, '64) died March
28 at the age of 59. Harris served with the Navy Dental Corps and
worked as a dentist in Chico for 30 years. Survivors include his
wife, Terry; sons, Todd and Brandon; daughter, Jamie; father and
stepmother, Eugene and June; stepfather, Wendal; brothers, David
and Mark; sisters, Shannon and Lori; and three grandchildren.
1970s
LORAINE CAPSHAW (B.A., English, '70) died Feb.
16 in Chico. She was 76. Capshaw was a teacher and a member of Job's
Daughters, Girl Scouts of America, and Alpha Chi sorority. She is
survived by her sons, William and Robert; daughters, Pamela and
Debra; brother, George; eight grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
PHYLLIS HALL (B.A., Sociology, '73) died Nov.
28 at the age of 51 after a battle with leukemia. Hall was a teacher
and director of John Swett-Woodbridge School in Martinez, California,
for 19 years. Her husband, Larry; daughter, Brittney; son, Craig;
parents, Donald and Helen; and brother, George, survive her.
TOM UTLEY (B.S., Accounting, '76) died Dec. 30
as a result of cancer. He was 49. Utley resided in Atlanta for 13
years and worked for the McKesson Corporation. He is survived by
his wife, Lisa; sons, Jordan and Jacob; stepson, Kyle; and brother,
Michael.
LISA JANE WELCH GRAY (B.A., Home Economics, '77)
died Jan. 22 at the age of 47. Gray worked from home, babysitting
and doing collections work for doctors' offices. Her husband, Robert,
preceded her in death in 1990. She is survived by her daughters,
Gabrielle and Sierra; sisters, Vicki and Julie; brothers, Brett
and Blair; and parents, David and Elisabeth.
1980s
RICH BOWEN (B.S., Agriculture, '81) died March
31 in a Chico hospital. He was 51. Bowen served in the U.S. Army
from 1968 to 1971. After graduating, he worked at his family's orange
farm and for the Orland Unified School District. He is survived
by his three sons, Eric, Nick, and Matt; parents, Floyd and Maude;
brother, Allen; and sister, Barbara.
STEPHEN BECKLEY (M.A., English, '83) died April
15 at the age of 53. In 1987, Beckley was awarded a fellowship with
the National Endowment of the Arts to study English literature at
Princeton University. He was a teacher at Northview High School
in Covina, California, and Hoopa High School in Humboldt County
before taking a position with the Orland Unified School District,
where he taught for more than 20 years. Survivors include his sons,
Dustin and Ethan; mother, Margaret; four sisters; and five brothers.
SALLIE FREDENBURG (B.S., Chemistry/ Microbiology,
'85) died Feb. 13 at her home in Chico after a brief illness. She
was 49. Fredenberg was a clinical technologist and gourmet cook.
She is survived by her husband, Ted; and sons, Kevin and Donald.
ALIOUNE FAME (attended '83'88, Business Administration)
died March 17 at the age of 37. Fame was an activist and student
leader at CSU, Chico and served as coordinator of the Chico Peace
and Justice Center. He organized a Christmas antiwar toy exchange
in 1994, coached for Chico Cal Soccer and the Chico Youth Soccer
League, and hosted a world-beat music program on a local radio station.
1990s
KEVIN CHEDA (B.A., Information and Communication
Studies, '90) died Jan. 6 from bone cancer. He was 33. Cheda was
a bank branch manager in El Cerrito, California, until 1997. He
had been selected to carry the Olympic torch through San Francisco
in January, but his wife, Lisa, and mother, Mary Ann, carried it
in his honor just 12 days after his death. Survivors include his
wife, Lisa; parents, Vern and Mary Ann; brother, Kirk; and sister,
Michelle.
KEVIN
TOBIASSEN (B.A., Liberal Studies, '99; Credential, '01)
died June 22, 2001, while awaiting a kidney transplant. At the time
of his death, he was eagerly awaiting the opportunity to teach at
the elementary school level. He is survived by his mother, Sharon.
