Reflections
by Marion Harmon
In this issue, we say good-bye to California State University,
Chico's 17th president, Manuel A. Esteban. Over the past decade,
he has guided the university during a period of considerable growth
and was instrumental in raising academic standings, creating new
scholarships, fighting alcohol abuse, and greatly improving the
university's relationship with the community. We wish him well in
his new endeavors, which include working as a special assistant
to the chancellor of California State University.
We also take a look at the Free Speech Area -- the reason it was
established, some memorable events that took place there, and recent
happenings related to the war in Iraq. If you remember an interesting
event in the Free Speech Area when you were on campus, please share
your memories with us by e-mailing
publications@csuchico.edu or writing to Marion Harmon; Public
Affairs and Publications; CSU, Chico; Chico, CA 95929-0040. We look
forward to hearing from you.
