1920s

DOROTHY OLIVE TRIPP (Credential, '22; A.B., Education, '50; Credential, '51) died Jan. 7 at the age of 100. Tripp taught for 40 years in many Chico schools and completed her career as principal at Chapman Elementary School in 1962. She was an active volunteer with Enloe Medical Center and the Discovery Shoppe. She was preceded in death by her brothers, Merle and Charles, and is survived by many nieces and nephews.

1930s

DOROTHY E. NOTLEY (A.B., Education, '33) died April 10 at the age of 90. Notley taught for 12 years in Butte and Alameda Counties before retiring in 1972. Her husband, Ronald; daughter, Kathryn; six grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren survive her.

VIOLET GRANVILLE ZENO (A.B., Education, '33) died Feb. 2 at the age of 92. Zeno taught at Webster Elementary School in Oakland, California, until 1950, when she left to form Zeno Associates, a public relations firm, with her husband. She is survived by her husband of 64 years, James; daughters, Suzanne and Mary; son, James; seven grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

HARRIET FRANCES DOWNING (A.B., Education, '34; Credential, '36) died Nov. 19 at the age of 89. Downing spent several years teaching at elementary schools in Corning, Brentwood, and Woodland before joining the U.S. Navy to serve in World War II. She taught at Chico and Bidwell Junior High Schools until her retirement in 1973. She is survived by her brother, Robert; niece, Carol; and two nephews, Dan and Kendall.

ALDEN BARBER (attended fall '35-spring '37) died Jan. 17 at the age of 81. Barber served as a reporter and editor for the Chico Record before joining the Boy Scouts as an assistant executive in West Los Angeles. In 1967, he was appointed chief executive of the national Boy Scouts of America, a position he held until his retirement in 1976. He is survived by his wife, Mitzi; daughters, Sharon, Susan, and Maryann; son, Mark; one granddaughter; and two grandsons.

EDMUND J. CAIN (attended fall '35-spring '37) died Jan. 17 at the age of 84. Cain taught at Danbury State Teachers College and the University of Delaware before accepting the position of dean of the College of Education at the University of Nevada, Reno in 1964, a position he held until his retirement in 1984. His wife of 58 years, Virginia; three children; seven grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren survive him.

Photo: John Marshall CarahJOHN MARSHALL CARAH (attended spring '40-spring '41) died Feb. 3 at the age of 81. Carah left school to enroll in the Army Air Corps, where he served as a combat pilot in World War II, later retiring from the U.S. Air Force in 1966 with the rank of lt. colonel. His wife, Connie; son Alan; brothers, Alfred and William; and grandson, Eugene, predeceased him. He is survived by his sons Warren, Jonathan, and Ian; and two grandchildren.

DOROTHY MAY RABO (attended fall '40-spring '42) died March 13 at the age of 80. Rabo and her husband worked in the farming and ranching industry together in Durham for more than 50 years. Her husband of 58 years, Fred, predeceased her. She is survived by her sons, Mike, Ron, and Nick; daughters, Mary Ann and Suzie; and 14 grandchildren.

JAMES M. CRAIL (A.B., Education, '41; Credential, '41) died Jan. 7. Crail was a founding member of Delta Psi Delta and taught in the Sacramento area. He is survived by his daughter, Kaaren.

Welch served in the U.S. Air Force during World War II and worked as a plumbing contractor in San Gabriel until 1976. His wife, Edzie, preceded him in death. He is survived by his son, Bill.

1950s

LOIS C. ADAMS (attended '52, '55, and '58) died June 7 in Chico at the age of 93. She was married to Harlen Adams, former executive dean of CSU, Chico, who died in 1997. Adams graduated from the University of Nevada, Reno and met her husband while working on her master's in education at Stanford University. They married in 1938 and moved to Chico. She taught second grade at Parkview Elementary School and business at Chico Senior High School. She co-founded the Chico Family Services Association and the Chico chapter of Parents and Friends of Lesbians and Gays, and supported CSU, Chico's Adopt-a-Class program, recently renamed for her. Survivors include her children, Harlene, Gordon, and Martin; six grandchildren; and her brother and sister.

MURIEL ELAINE GIBSON (attended spring '58-spring '60) died March 8 at the age of 80. Gibson served as president of the Butte County Women's Civil Defense, and was a board member of the Bidwell Mansion Association and the Janet Turner Print Gallery. Her husband, Charles, preceded her in death. She is survived by her sons, Garrett and Charles; granddaughters, Frances and Cherisse; grandson, Stephen; and two great-grandsons.

JOHN C. OLSEN (A.B., Credential, '59) died April 2. He was 72. Olsen had a 30-year career in education, ending with his position as a school psychologist for the Manteca Unified School District. His wife, Glenda; children, Karen, Christopher, and Lora; and seven grandchildren survive him.

1960s

NORMAN LEE COLE (A.B., Education, '62; Credential, '62) died Jan. 18 at the age of 71. Cole's teaching career spanned 21 years, 20 of them spent at Gray Avenue School in Yuba City, California. He is survived by his wife of 42 years, Eris; sister, Ella; and numerous cousins, nieces, and nephews.

OMAR KENNETH MCCART (A.B., Art, '65) died Nov. 1 at the age of 81. McCart spent 23 years as a professor at the Oregon Institute of Technology in Klamath Falls, Oregon. He is survived by his wife, Ruth; sons, Kenneth and Douglas; daughter, Peggy Jane; eight grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

THELMA "TIMMY" WHITE (B.A., Education, '65; Credential, '65) died Nov. 26. She was 92. White wrote many historical articles for the Willows Journal and was one of the founders of the Colusa County Historical Society. She is survived by her children, Kim, Juli, Jed, and Bessie; 13 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

LOUISE MARIE BRANDT (B.S., Nursing, '66; M.S., Nursing, '75) died Nov. 17. Brandt worked as an LVN at Butte County Hospital, Curran Hospital, Oroville Elementary School District, and Oroville Hospital, retiring with more than 20 years of service in the nursing industry. Her husband, Clarence, and two grandchildren preceded her in death. She is survived by her children, Pat, Clarence, Linda, and David; 10 grandchildren; and 20 great-grandchildren.

WAYNE BIANCALANA (attended fall '68-spring '69) died Jan. 1 at the age of 54. Biancalana operated a ski school in Alaska for 10 years, then worked at a developing firm in the Bay Area. He is survived by his wife, Melinda, and daughter, Devon.

KATHERINE "KIT" (REYNOLDS) BRUNER (B.A., Art, '69) died Nov. 7 in Davis, California. She was 55. Bruner was a committed volunteer advocate for children going through the court system in Yolo County. She is survived by her husband, James; children, Jonathan and Sarah; mother, Sybil; sisters, Julia and Alison; brother James; and numerous nieces and nephews.

1970s

MARK ETIENNE (attended fall '71-spring '74) died Nov. 4 in Hermosa Beach. He was 49. Etienne lived in Southern California for 30 years, where he was a writer and musician. He is survived by his son, Justin; mother, Patricia; father, Myron; and brother, Dirk.

JOEL HARRY (B.A, Social Welfare, '72) died Jan. 26 in Chico after a 15-month battle with cancer. He was 54. He is survived by his wife, Kathleen (Lennon) Harry (B.S., Home Economics, '72); son, Christopher, and his wife, Lorraine; and son, Brian, and his wife, Krissy.

BOB GARNER (B.A., Industrial Technology, '73) died Jan. 19 in Chico at the age of 52. Garner worked in the trucking industry for many years. He is survived by his wife, Carol; sons, Michael, Jeffrey, and Timothy; stepdaughter, Roxanna Boles; and stepson, Steven Boles.

BILL HARKNESS (B.A., Physical Education, '74) died April 6 in Paradise, California. He was 52. Harkness was a lead x-ray technician at Enloe Medical Center in Chico, where he mentored many radiology students. He was active in several community organizations, including Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, Little League, and Chico Community Ballet. Harkness is survived by his wife, Charlotte; children, Sarah and Billy; parents, William and Marion; sister, Jane; and brothers, Dana and Alan.

JEFFREY J. GARCIA (attended fall '75-spring '78) died Nov. 1 at the age of 47. Garcia was a lifelong resident of Monterey County, where he was a contractor and carpenter. He is survived by his mother, Easter; his stepfather, Robert; and his sister, Patricia.

DON MOSELEY (attended spring '75-spring '77) died Nov. 30, in Honolulu. He was 72. Moseley and his wife, Barbara, owned an antique and book store in Santa Rosa, California. He was also an automotive engineer and a vocational education teacher. Moseley is survived by his wife, four children, two stepchildren, and seven grandchildren.

ETHELYN "LYN" HARTT (B.A., Social Welfare, '75) died Dec. 12 in Chico. Hartt worked as a school counselor. She is survived by her husband, Ronald; children, Sarah and John; and mother, Evelyn.

JOHN H. THINKER (B.A., Public Administration, '76) died Jan. 24 in Chico. He was 69. Thinker served in the U.S. Navy for eight years; he became a police officer and was a detective when he retired in 1980. Thinker was preceded in death by his father. He is survived by his mother, Celeste; daughter, Vicki; son, Michael; and fiancée, Marilyn Brown.

ROBERT F. BRADSHAW (M.A., Political Science, '77) died Jan. 28 in Riverside, California. He was 55. Bradshaw was a high school teacher for 16 years; he was also a teaching fellow at UC Santa Barbara and CSU, Chico for four years. He is survived by a brother, Ralph; and a sister, Susan.

CHARLES G. MAGUIRE (B.A., Business Management, '77) died Jan. 31 in Paradise. He was 47. Maguire was a real estate broker; he also coached junior high basketball and taught basketball at Butte Community College. He is survived by his parents, Marie and Gerald; three brothers; a sister; and many nieces and nephews.

1980s

JANIS (BISCHOFF) REYNOLDS (B.S., Business Administration, '81) died Dec. 20 in Chico. She is survived by her husband, Preston; son, Alan; daughters, Kendall and Kristy; parents, Don and June; brothers, Edward and Donald; and sister, Karen.

PAIGE (ANDERSON) SKILLERN (attended fall '81-spring '83) died March 6 in San Antonio, Texas. She is survived by her husband, Gary; daughters, Michael and Mardi; parents, Howard and Joan Isom, and Peter Anderson; sister, Kimi; brothers, Sean and Rob; grandmother, Marion; and many nieces and nephews.

1990s

GORDON CASAMAJOR (B.A., History, '93) died Feb. 19 at the age of 87. Casamajor, a longtime resident of Chico, served in the U.S. Air Force during World War II before settling in Chico and opening a hardware store downtown. Casamajor later began a career as a life insurance agent. He was active in community affairs, including two terms as mayor of Chico. Casamajor is survived by his wife of more than 60 years, Mary Helen; brother, Paul; four children; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

2000s

JUAN CARLOS LUGO (attended fall '00) died Feb. 24 in Chico. He was 21. Lugo had recently served a two-year mission in Brazil for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He grew up in Chico and attended Pleasant Valley High School, where he participated in several sports. Lugo attended Brigham Young University, Idaho before coming to CSU, Chico, where he majored in mechanical engineering. Lugo is survived by his mother, Guadalupe; his father, Guillermo; two brothers, Luis and Andres; and his grandfather.
