Mentor remembered

On Aug. 16, 1994, Art Preciado, professor and past chairman of the Department of Sociology and Social Work of CSU, Chico, died at the age of 54. He was a graduate of CSU, Chico (AB, Social Welfare, ’65) and received his master’s degree in social work from the University of Southern California. Art impacted hundreds of students over his career at CSU, Chico and was highly regarded and respected.

I for one can honestly say that Art was my primary mentor in college and in my career in child welfare services. He was the consummate professional who challenged, encouraged, and supported his students. He was energetic, dynamic, knowledgeable, and caring. He was also known for the way he dressed—never wearing the same outfit twice in a semester! Art was nationally recognized as an expert in child welfare services. He also taught for the UC Davis Extension Program and was honored as the outstanding professor of the year in 1987.

In 1995, Art posthumously received the Outstanding Academic Advisor of the Year award by the National Academic Advising Association. Following Art’s passing, the Art Preciado Memorial Scholarship fund was established. In memory of a good friend, colleague, and mentor, I encourage any of Art’s former students to make contributions to the scholarship so that we can continue to honor this outstanding man.

—David Erb, LCSW (BA, Social Welfare, ’73), retired (2009) Children’s Services administrator for San Joaquin County

Note: Contributions to the scholarship may be made by check, payable to: Art Preciado Memorial Scholarship #08237 and sent to Daria Booth; University Advancement; CSU, Chico; Chico, CA 95929-0155, or online at www.csuchico.edu/advancement.
