Wildcats on the Move

Dear Alums
There are a number of new things going on at your alma mater and within your alumni association.

Our Students in Free Enterprise (SIFE) team won the national championship in Kansas City this spring. Their adviser is the faculty representative on the alumni board of directors, our very own Curt DeBerg. And then the Wildcat baseball team won its second NCAA Division II World Series in three years. Other braggin' rights include the following: engineering students won two regional competitions; civil engineers won the American Society of Civil Engineers Steel Bridge Competition for the third straight year; mechanical engineers won the American Society of Mechanical Engineers Student Design Competition; and the student-published newspaper, The Orion, was named 1999 Newspaper of the Year by the Associated Collegiate Press for the second year in a row.

Chico students excelled on professional competency exams. Future teachers at Chico led all other universities with a 98.4 percent pass rate on the California Reading Instruction Competency Assessment Test. On the Registered Nurse Licensing Exam: Chico 100 percent pass rate; national average 80 percent. On the Registered Dietitians Exam: Chico 95 percent pass rate; national average 80 percent. On the Certified Financial Planner Board Certification: Chico 75 percent pass rate; national average 57 percent. On the Professional Engineers License Exam: Chico 83 percent; national average 62 percent.

And now about your association. This spring the association voted to return to a dues-paying structure. Annual membership will be $45, and life membership will be $750, payable in full or by three equal annual payments. Membership benefits will include CSU library privileges, auto rental discounts, upgraded membership at Costco, discounts with North American Van Lines, discounts to various theme parks, and more. Watch for your mailing with complete details.

The board of directors has elected two new members. They are Thaddeus Salter ('88) and Debbie (MacLean) Rider ('81). Each will serve a three-year term.

Many travel programs are now available to alumni, faculty, staff, parents, and friends. Destinations include Russia, Italy, China, the Aegean and Mediterranean, with a special New York City trip planned for next spring. Contact the Alumni Office for details and prices.

Our new Web site will be coming on-line about the time you receive this publication. Check us out at www.csuchico.edu/alm.

Last but not least, mark October 9 on your calendar. That is the date for Homecoming this year. We are reviving the tradition of a Homecoming parade, holding various reunions, opening the time capsules of the classes of '39 and '49, and featuring a Homecoming Dance with Blue Plate Special providing music. Plan to attend and bring some of your classmates with you.

Please give us your new address if you move, and have a great autumn.
