Helping To Make CSU, Chico Better

Sportsline

In its first year in the scholarship business, CSU, Chico athletics offered $81,739 in athletic grants-in-aid to seventy-eight student athletes. While this represents a tremendous effort on the part of the athletic program, boosters, and community, NCAA rules allow CSU, Chico to offer as much as $804,493 annually for scholarships in our twelve varsity intercollegiate athletic programs. Our student athletes received an average of $1,048 for the year, which doesn't quite cover the fees for a full semester at CSU, Chico.
The Wildcat Century Club and the athletic department continue to bring in additional funds designated strictly for scholarships. For the last six years, the athletic department has held an annual dinner and auction to raise funds for the department. In the past, the funds raised have gone into the general athletics fund, but now the emphasis is on athletic scholarships to help deserving student athletes at CSU, Chico.

Local businesses support CSU, Chico athletics by sponsoring events and making donations, allowing the department to continue to host quality tournaments and events. Tri Counties Bank has generously extended its support of the men's Tri Counties Bank Mac Martin Basketball Tournament and the women's Tri Counties Bank Coslet Classic for the next three years.

Enloe Medical Center joined forces with CSU, Chico athletics last spring to produce the CSU, Chico Women's Walk for Fitness. The walk will be an annual event to raise scholarship funds specifically for female student athletes. Women in the community were encouraged to become team captains and bring their co-workers and friends together for this special event to promote fitness for all women and girls.

Growth has been steady for the Wildcat Century Club, with membership growing from 58 in 1994-95 to over 400 in 1998-99. Much of this success is due to the hard work of development officer Abe Baily, the department contact for the Wildcat Century Club. Baily finds that most donors are motivated by a desire to support student athletes with scholarships.

The Wildcat Century Club now has a board member liaison for each sport who will help with special-event planning and fund raising. Every sport at CSU, Chico is working hard to establish or enhance a foundation of friends and supporters. Fans, alumni, parents, and friends are encouraged to join in these new efforts. Call Abe Baily at 530-898-6899 for more information.

The Wildcat Century Club and department of athletics plan to increase the frequency of communication through the newsletter 'Cat Tracks and with more publicity for athletic contests and club events. The department's Web site is full of information and can be found at www.csuchico.edu/athletics.
