Successful 1999 Homecoming builds toward the Twenty-first Century

Some people might think that homecoming without football is like peanut butter without jelly, but you would never know it at Chico State last Oct. 9. More than 1,000 alumni, students, parents, and other members of the campus community filled Nettleton Stadium for a barbecue; 300 jived and jitterbugged to popular swing band Blue Plate Special (which boasts several Chico alums); 200 gathered to watch time capsules from the classes of 1939 and '49 opened; and 22 members of the class of '49 attended a Golden Grads luncheon at the newly renamed Alfred E. Warrens Reception Center (formerly the President's Mansion).

For many curious and nostalgic alumni, the highlight was the unearthing of long-buried time capsules. President Manuel A. Esteban examined the contents of the capsules, and read several mementos enclosed, including event announcements, a dance card, and a 1949 yearbook.

Plans are underway for Homecoming 2000 on Oct. 14. Time capsules from the classes of 1940 and '50 will be opened. Reunions of the classes of 1940, '50, '60, '70, '80, and '90 are planned. To get involved or for more information, contact the alumni office at 503-898-6472.

President Esteban holds a copy of a 1949 yearbook preserved by a class member and a yearbook buried underground for 50 years in a welded-shut steel time capsule, which sits pried open on the table in front of him. Alumni Relations director Jack Fox and John Holtby Hill, 1949 class president, look on. The opening of the 1939 and 1949 time capsules took place during 1999 Homecoming.
