B. Gordon Gibb, former psychology professor and vice president
for Academic Affairs, died Oct. 31, 1999, in Mt. Vernon, Wash. He was
78. Gibb came to Chico in 1957 after completing his Ph.D. at Stanford
in industrial psychology. He was born in Nebraska and did his undergraduate
work at Nebraska Wesleyan. During World War II he was a tank commander
in Europe, serving under General George Patton.
Gibb was promoted to full professor in 1968. He was head of the psychology
program, within the Division of Education and Psychology, for five years.
He was an active faculty senator prior to being appointed VPAA by then-President
Bob Hill. Gibb entered the early retirement program in 1986 and became
an emeritus faculty member in 1988.

Anthropology professor Arthur Lehmann died Sept. 18, 1999, in
Chico. He was 64. Lehmann came to the Chico faculty in 1969. He was a
former chair of the anthropology department from 1976-85 and was geography
department chair from 1984-85. He had done research in Ghana, Central
African Republic, and Morocco. He was the co-author with fellow Chico
anthropologist James Myers of Magic, Witchcraft and Religion and taught
a class by the same name.
Lehmann was an active member of the Southwestern Anthropological Association,
American Anthropological Association, African Studies Association, Society
for Medical Anthropology, and other professional organizations.
Jay Lyman, professor emeritus of economics, died June 10, 1999, in
Sonora. He was 73. Lyman began teaching at CSU, Chico in 1971 and retired
in 1990. Along with his many campus contributions, Professor Lyman was
a former president of the Butte County Economic Development Corporation
and the recipient of the first Jay Lyman Award. Lyman earned his B.A.
at CSU, Sacramento, and received his M.A. and Ph.D. in economics from
UC, Davis.
Lyle Meier, professor emeritus of mathematics, died Oct. 12, 1999,
in Chico. He was 74. Meier was a professor at CSU, Chico from 1962 until
his retirement in 1988. He did his undergraduate work at Nebraska State
College and earned master's degrees at University of Nebraska and University
of Illinois. During his career Professor Meier was very active in the
mathematics teacher training program.
Victor Powers, professor emeritus in accounting, died Dec. 5, 1999,
in Chico. He was 69. Powers came to the university in 1971 and retired
in 1994. He earned his Ph.D. from University of Washington. He did his
undergraduate work at Golden Gate University and earned his M.A. at Brigham
Young University. He was department chair of the Department of Accounting
and Quantitative Methods from 1973 to 1976.
Jack Safarik, professor emeritus of psychology and former director
of Institutional Research, died at home in Chico Nov. 28, after a lengthy
illness. He was 70. Safarik came to Chico State in 1965 in a split position
as assistant professor in psychology and associate dean of students (counseling
and testing). He served as director of Institutional Research from 1971
until his retirement in 1988.
Dwight Shannon, assistant director and director of the library
from 1960 to 1982, died in Chico April 26, 1999. He was 81. Shannon previously
was an assistant librarian at Texas A&M University and worked at the Texas
Engineers Library and the Dayton Montgomery County Public Library System
in Ohio.
Celeste Sherwood, student services coordinator of the American
Language and Culture Institute (ALCI), died of cancer Nov. 29, at her
home. She was 55. Sherwood began working at ALCI in 1987 as a teacher,
before becoming student services coordinator in 1997. Her husband, Allen,
was former alumni relations director at CSU, Chico.
Pat Sullivan, former serials librarian in the Meriam Library, died
July 25, 1999, in Chico. She was 64. Sullivan was a native of Milwaukee.
She began her employment at Chico in 1974 and retired in 1994.
