More than 200 African American alumni returned to campus during Homecoming weekend and participated in a variety of activities, including the Homecoming barbecue, a formal dinner and dance at the Sierra Nevada Brewing Co. ballroom, and a Sunday morning brunch at the home of alumni board member Glen Toney (B.A., Philosophy, '66).

"The reunion reignited the feeling of family and friends," notes Valerie Lathern (Master of Public Administration, '88). "We all realized, had it not been for Chico State and our shared and individual experiences there, we would have never met. We enjoyed walking through campus, without a book bag or the need to study for a test! The dance at Sierra Nevada Brewing ballroom underscored one fact—we are not getting older, we are getting better."

The African American alumni reunion was the single largest reunion held on campus during Homecoming weekend. Reunion organizer Billie Jackson (B.A., English, '75), associate director of CSU, Chico's Educational Support Services, hopes to double the size of the group's next reunion, which is planned for 2002. African American alumni who wish to participate in reunion planning or other activities are encouraged to contact Jackson at or to visit the African American alumni home page at
