Last fall, CSU, Chico President Manuel A. Esteban met with a representative of Mexico's largest technology-oriented university system to forge a partnership between the two institutions. Esteban and Jose Rocha, director general of the Colima campus of the Monterrey Institution of Technology and Higher Education (ITESM), signed a Memorandum of Agreement for Academic Cooperation and Student Exchange November 3 at CSU, Chico. The ITESM system of 29 campuses is a private system of higher education in Mexico that focuses on business and engineering. The agreement is to promote student exchanges and faculty collaboration. CSU, Chico students will have experience working and learning in Mexico, and ITESM students will have similar experiences in Northern California. CSU, Chico's Latin American studies will move their six-week cultural immersion program to the city of Colima and will work with the Colima campus to manage the program. A contingent of ITESM faculty members will spend time on the Chico campus this summer. Robert Jackson, dean of the School of Graduate, International, and Sponsored Programs; Ken Derucher, dean of the College of Engineering, Computer Science, and Technology; and faculty members Susan Place, Dennis Schlais, and Charlotte Eklund have been involved in nine months of planning to complete the agreement. "NAFTA has dramatically changed the relationship between Mexico and the U.S., particularly California," says Jackson. "This partnership with one of the most prestigious institutions in Mexico has great potential for students studying business, engineering, Spanish, and Latin American studies." |
