1940s
ROY
F. BEACH (B.A, Industrial Arts, ’43) designed and
taught the art of carpet sculpturing for 35 years. Beach is responsible
for inventing nearly all of the equipment and techniques used to
carve designs in carpet. Fully retired now, he can be contacted
at 916-428-2144.
1960s
JIM RICHMOND (A.B., Education, ’62; Credential,
’62; M.A., Elementary Curriculum and Methods, ’68) is
a high school science and mathematics teacher. Richmond also works
as a water, mineral, and geotechnical consultant, and was recently
hired to conduct an erosion study of the Upper Putah Creek watershed
in Lake County, California.
RICHARD MCBRAYER (B.A., Social Science, ’63)
retired after 37 years as an educator. He spent 36 years teaching
at Richfield Elementary School in Corning, California. McBrayer
and his wife, Kathleen, reside in Corning.
DIANA DEATS-O’REILLY (B.A., Education,
’63; Credential, ’63) is a retired educator and author
of Porphyria—The Unknown Disease. O’Reilly
also serves as the chief executive officer of Porphyrin Press/Porphyria
Educational Services in Grand Forks, North Dakota. She and her husband,
Edward, reside in Grand Forks, and can be reached through their

ADRIENNE MADDALENA (B.A., Education, ’64;
Credential, ’64) retired after teaching for 26 years in the
Plumas County School District. Maddalena and her husband, Guido,
have two grown sons and two grandsons, and reside in Portola, California.
JAY HOLMES (B.A., History, ’66) is a retired
principal of the California Youth Academy, a state youth correctional
center. He is currently a member of the Manteca Unified School Board,
and is active with the Boys & Girls Club and the Manteca Morning
Rotary.
LARRY JACKSON (B.A, Physical Education, ’68)
has spent the past 30 years as the owner/operator of Heidelberg
Graphics, an independent printing company. Jackson helped local
historian Lois McDonald put John and Annie Bidwell’s diaries
on disks that are sold at Bidwell Mansion. He resides in Chico.
RAY MERZ (B.A., Sociology, ’68) was recently
honored for his service as director of the Placer County Health
and Human Services Department. Merz was nominated for the award
by his co-workers.
ROY MICHAEL OWENS (B.A., English, ’68) is
president and chief executive officer of the North Penn Chamber
of Commerce in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Owens recently returned
from an economic development conference in Poland and Germany. He
resides near Villanova, on Philadelphia’s Main Line, and can

1970s
FRED BINSWANGER (B.A., Physical Education, ’70;
Credential, ’71) teaches physical education and mathematics
at Westwood High School in Westwood, California. He resides in Westwood
with his wife, Kari, and son, Karl.
LT.
GEN. GARY HUGHEY (B.S., Business, ’70) is the deputy
commander in chief of the United States Transportation Command,
the designated single manager of the U.S. global defense transportation
system. Hughey (in photo right), a U.S. Marine, was recently promoted
to the rank of lieutenant general by Air Force General John Handy.
He is the eighth deputy commander in chief of USTRANSCOM since it
was established in 1987.
ELAINE PRATER (B.S., Business Education, ’71;
Credential, ’72) recently retired after 30 years of teaching
for Gridley High School in Gridley, California. Prater also taught
business classes at Butte Community College for 19 years. She now
resides in Grove, Oklahoma.
GENE SAKAHARA (B.S, Social Science, ’71)
is a recruiter for Gilroy Unified School District in Gilroy, California.
Sakahara taught at various schools and served as principal of San
Ysidro School, Rod Kelley School, and Jordon School in Gilroy for
several years. He helped develop a comical cooking show that he
has performed with his partner, Sam Bozzo, at the Gilroy Garlic
Festival every year for the past seven years. He resides in Gilroy.
ROBERT
D. WALTON (B.S., Business Administration, ’71) is
the interim chief executive officer of CalPERS, the California Public
Employee’s Retirement System. Walton (in photo right) has
been employed with CalPERS for the past 27 years. He and his wife,
Patti, reside in Folsom, California.
BARRY BAKKEN (B.A., Psychology, ’72) served
in the U.S. Marine Corps reserves during the Vietnam War. Bakken
does technology marketing for Phase II, a Santa Clara company. He
resides in Los Gatos, California, with his wife, Candy, and two
children.
PAUL JOHNSON (B.A., Physical Education, ’72;
Credential, ’73) coached and taught physical education for
28 years in Red Bluff, California. Johnson is currently an assistant
principal at Colusa High School and Colusa Alternative High School
in Colusa, California. He and his wife, Shelly, have four children.
DAVID L. SANDERS (B.S., Business Administration,
’72) recently retired after 11 years as the finance director
for the City of Folsom, California. Sanders has held positions with
the Mendocino County Public Works Department, the City of Chico,
and the Town of Paradise.
VIVIEN WONG (B.A., Sociology, ’72) worked
for the San Diego County Office of Education, served as principal
at Olivewood Elementary School, and spent the past five years as
the principal of Yulupa School. She recently took a position as
the new superintendent/principal of the Cinnabar School District
in Petaluma, California, where she resides with her husband, Carl.
MARGARET DAME (B.A., Business Education, ’73)
is the Big Pine Unified School District superintendent in Inyo,
California. Dame earned her administrative credential from Simpson
College in Redding, California, and served as assistant principal
for schools in Siskiyou County and Barstow before going to teach
English at Big Pine High School. She and her husband, Gerald, live
in Big Pine, California.
WILLIAM J. LYONS, JR. (B.A., History, ’73)
was recently appointed to the California Water Commission by Governor
Gray Davis. Lyons (in photo right) served as chairman of the Farm
Service Agency of the U.S. Department of Agriculture for California
for five years, and most recently served as secretary for the California
State Department of Food and Agriculture.
RICK SALMON (B.S., Business Administration, ’73)
has owned and operated Salmon RK, General Contracting in Benicia,
California, with his wife, Kay, for 23 years. Their children, Kelly
and Paul, both attend CSU, Chico. Salmon and his wife reside in
Benicia.
THOMAS SIMPSON (B.A., History, ’74) is the
new principal at King City High School in King City, California.
Simpson served 12 years in the U.S. Marine Corps, obtaining the
rank of major, before spending the next 16 years as a teacher and
administrator.
MARY JO FOX (B.A., Physical Education, ’75;
Credential, ’77) is the administrative vice principal at Woodside
High School in Woodside, California. Fox spent 12 years teaching
and coaching at Amador High School, 10 years teaching physical education
at Ione Junior High School, and two years as assistant principal
at Armijo High School in Fairfield, California, before taking her
current position.
MIKE MCELHINEY (B.S., Agriculture, ’75)
recently received a national award from the U.S. Department of Agriculture
for his research and conservation efforts. McElhiney is a district
conservationist for the USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service,
a position he has held for the past 27 years.
ERIC SNEDEKER (B.A., Physical Education, ’75;
Credential, ’78; M.A., Physical Education, ’81; Credential,
’81) is the principal of Mill Street School in Orland, California.
Snedeker spent three years as the administrative director of the
Butte County Office of Education, 10 years teaching special education,
and is also currently the coach for the Chico Rooks professional
soccer team.
ANDREW WADE (B.S., Civil Engineering, ’75)
is a structural engineer for Tobey Wade Structural Engineers in
Truckee, California. Wade has more than 28 years’ experience
with structural consulting firms, and was involved in the restoration
of the San Francisco Opera House. He lives in Glenshire, California,
with his wife, Suzy, and two daughters.
CHERYL GANN-MCGUIRE (A.B., Liberal Studies, ’76;
Credential, ’78; Services Credential, ’93; M.A., Education,
’94) is the principal at John McManus Elementary School in
Chico. Gann-McGuire (in photo right) taught special education and
served as assistant principal at Little Chico Creek Elementary School
prior to being selected for the McManus position. She resides in
Chico with her husband, Jerry, who recently retired from his position
as Butte County superintendent of schools.
MARK A. OUIMETTE (B.A., Geography, ’77) is
the head of the Department of Geological Sciences and the director
of the Environmental Management Program at Hardin-Simmons University
in Abilene, Texas. Ouimette (in photo left) earned his Ph.D. from
the University of Texas at El Paso, where he worked for a short
time, and also lectured at East Carolina University. He and his
wife, Nina, have three children.
JEFFREY BARKER (B.A., History, ’78; B.A.,
Philosophy, ’78) is the vice president for academic affairs
and dean of the College of Arts and Sciences at Converse College
in Spartanburg, South Carolina. Prior to taking the position at
Converse College, he was chair and professor for the Department
of Philosophy at Albright College in Reading, Pennsylvania. Barker
(in photo right) also founded and directed the Albright Center for
Ethics, Law, and Medicine at Albright College. He received his Ph.D.
in philosophy from Purdue University.
ALBERT WOOD (B.A., Psychology, ’78) is the
chief financial officer for PalmSource, the software unit for Palm,
Inc. Wood received his master’s degree from San Jose State
University and served as chief financial officer of Insignia Solutions,
a wireless technology company. He resides in Danville, California.
GLYNNIS CAMPBELL (B.A., Music, ’79) is a
historical romance novelist. Campbell (in photo right) has published
four books—My Champion, My Warrior, My
Hero, and A Knight’s Vow. She also does voice-overs
for computer software and audio books, and is a mother of two.
PATTY MORIARTY (B.A., Art, 79; M.A., Information
and Communication Studies, ’82; Credential, ’89) is
an art teacher at Fair View High School in Chico, where she has
worked for the past seven years. Moriarty taught at the American
School of Milan in Milan, Italy, and spent 10 years as the director
of Community Action Volunteers in Education at CSU, Chico.
1980s
BILLY D. SIMMONS (B.A., Public Administration,
’80) was recently appointed to the Economic Strategy Panel
by Governor Gray Davis. Simmons is also a Yuba County supervisor
and director of the Regional Career Center for the Yuba County Office
of Education, where he has worked since 1987.
MICHAEL “MICK” SEIDEMAN (B.A., Geography,
’81; M.A., Geography, ’88) spent eight years traveling
through 125 countries. Seideman (in photo right) is founder and
chief executive officer of Totally Global, a travel and geography
education software company. He resides in San Rafael, California,
and can be reached via e-mail at mick@totallyglobal.com.
JOHN M. WARDELL (B.A., Psychology, ’81)
is currently the chief probation officer for the Butte County Probation
Department. Wardell worked for the Butte County Probation Department
for 15 years before taking a position with Nevada County as their
chief probation officer for five years. He resides in Oroville,
California, with his wife, Helen, and son, Jeremy.
MIKE CAWLEY (Credential, ’82; M.A., Education,
’86) is the principal at Davis High School in Davis, California.
During his 11 years at Lemoore High School in Lemoore, California,
Cawley garnered two California High School Principal-of-the-Year
awards, one from the National Association of Secondary School Principals
and the other from the Association of California School Administrators.
KATHLEEN KENDALL-TACKETT (B.A., Psychology, ’82;
M.A., Psychology, ’84) is a psychologist, researcher, and
accredited lactation consultant. She authored the book The Hidden
Feelings of Motherhood: Coping with Stress, Depression, and Burnout
in 2001. Kendall-Tackett is the Behavorial and Social Sciences
Distinguished Alum for 2003. She resides in Henniker, New Hampshire.
TONY RICHARD (B.A., International Relations, ’83)
is the principal at Brookside Elementary School in Willits, California.
Richard received his master’s degree from the United States
International University in London, England, and has served in the
United States Peace Corps for the past several years while teaching
at Baechtel Middle School in Willits.
PATRICK SINCLAIR (Credential, ’84) received
the 2002 Superintendent/Principal of the Year award from the Association
of California School Administrators. Sinclair recently retired from
his post as superintendent/principal for Antelope Elementary School
in Red Bluff, California, a position he had held since 1994. He
and his wife, Maureen, live in Red Bluff.
STEVE BROCKMAN (B.S., Business Administration,
’86) is the president of Builder’s Capital, Inc., a
real estate loan company based in Las Vegas, Nevada. Brockman has
been in the commercial loan business in Nevada since 1987, when
he worked for First Interstate Bank. He resides in Las Vegas.
ROXANNE
GOULD (B.A., Information and Communication Studies, ’86)
is vice president of California public and legislative affairs for
AeA, a group representing computer hardware and software manufacturers.
Gould (in photo right) has also lobbied for the California Building
Industry Association and the California Chamber of Commerce. She
resides in Sacramento, California, with her daughter, Kennedy.
RONALD JARRELL (B.A., Public Administration, ’86)
is the commander of the county jail for the Contra Costa Sheriff’s
Office in Contra Costa County, California. Jarrell spent the past
20 years as sheriff in Lassen County. He is married and has two
adult daughters and two grandsons.
KORI BIEBER (M.A., Psychology, ’88) is the
head of the counseling department at Rogue Community College in
Grants Pass, Oregon. In February 2002, Bieber was inducted into
the Hall of Fame at Butte Community College in Oroville, California.
TRISHA DELLIS (B.A., Psychology, ’88) spent
six years as an assistant principal before becoming principal at
Earle Jamieson High School in Grass Valley, California. She and
her husband, Jeff, have two sons, Zach and Brandon.
SALVADOR
FRIAS, JR. (B.A., Liberal Studies, ’88; Credential,
’90) is the assistant principal at Sierra Vista Junior High
School in Canyon Country, California. Frias (in photo right) received
his master’s degree in education administration from California
State University, San Bernardino.
MARK SMITH (B.A., English, ’88; Credential,’89)
is a network analyst for the Robert E. Kennedy Library at California
Polytechnic State University, Pomona. Smith, also an award-winning
salsa maker, earned top honors for his salsa recipe at the Stone
Soup Ethnic Music Faire in Grover Beach, California, last year.
He resides in Shell Beach, California.
KEVIN RAY WATSON (B.S., Business Administration,
’88; M.S., Business, ’96) is vice president and chief
financial officer of California Independent Bancorp and Feather
River State Bank. He resides in Yuba City, California.
LINDA PHILLIPS (Credential, ’89) recently
retired after 10 years as chair of the Tehama County Scholarship
Program, the program that sponsors the Miss Tehama County and Ambassador
of Tehama County contests. Phillips also taught for 30 years in
the Red Bluff Unified School District.
BRIAN WOODS (B.A., Art, ’89) is the director
of the Mary Graham Children’s Shelter in Galt, California.
Woods received his master’s degree from John F. Kennedy University
in Orinda, California. He and his wife, Jen, live in Galt with their
two children.

REBECCA LINKOUS (B.A., Psychology, ’90)
received her Juris Doctor from Empire College School of Law in Santa
Rosa, California. Linkous is a certified law clerk with the Sonoma
County District Attorney’s Office.
ANNETTE MEDE (B.A., German, ’90) is the
owner and operator of the Jamestown Hotel and Restaurant in historic
Jamestown, California. Mede spent several years working in the hospitality
business in the state of Washington before returning to California.
RENE SIMON (B.S., Biological Sciences, ’92)
is an inspector for the Placer County Agriculture Weights and Measures
Office. Simon is responsible for ensuring that plant materials being
shipped do not harbor any unwanted insects or harmful pests. She
began her career in San Mateo County as an insect-pest-detection
trapper.
JAROD COGSWELL (B.S., Recreation Administration,
’94) is the general manager of ClubSport Oregon, a full-service
athletic club in Tigard, Oregon. He resides in Tigard with his wife,
Kelly, and two daughters.
REED
DAVIS (B.A., Music, ’94) recently returned to CSU,
Chico to perform in the fall production of the operetta New
Moon. Davis (in photo right) has performed in numerous national
and international musicals such as Guys and Dolls, Oklahoma!,
West Side Story, and The Pajama Game. He resides
in Astoria, New York.
JULIE WINTERSCHEIDT (B.A., Liberal Studies, ’94)
teaches kindergarten and reading at Canyon Elementary School in
Lakehead, California. Winterscheidt received her teaching credential
from Simpson College in Redding, California. She and her husband,
Jim, have two daughters.
OSCAR DE LA TORRE (B.A., Latin American Studies,
’95; B.S., Political Science, ’95) is founder and director
of the Pico Youth and Family Center in Santa Monica, California.
The center focuses on providing services and leadership development
for low-income and troubled youth affected by crime and gang pressures
in the area. De la Torre received his master’s degree from
the University of Texas at Austin and is a member of the Task Force
on Racism and Discipline for the Santa Monica-Malibu School District
Board of Education.
AMANDA
DETMER (B.A., Theatre Arts, ’95) is starring in a
new NBC television comedy, A.U.S.A. Detmer (in photo left)
plays a public defender on the show, which airs Tuesdays at 9:30
p.m. She was the Humanities and Fine Arts Distinguished Alum for
2002.
KIMBERLY (GAY) GREENY (B.A., Journalism, ’95)
is studying to obtain her real estate license. Her husband, ERIK
GREENY (B.A., Social Science, ’96), is a senior researcher
for the Department of Medical Development at Stanford University.
They reside in Mountain View, California, with their daughter, and

MATT GORDON (B.A., Liberal Studies, ’98;
Credential, ’00) is the baseball coach at Mendocino College
in Ukiah, California. Gordon received coaching experience from working
with Chico American Legion, Butte Community College, the Northern
California Officials Association, and Elk Creek Junior/Senior High
School.
JENNIFER TERPSTRA (B.S., Agriculture, ’98)
is an agriculture teacher at Lodi High School. Terpstra received
the state Agriscience Teacher of the Year award for her work in
creating Lodi High School’s agricultural science academy program.
She resides in Oakdale, California, with her husband, John.
2000s
ROB BARNES (B.A., Psychology, ’00) is pursuing
a Ph.D. in sports psychology from the University of Florida in Gainesville.
Barnes is also a teaching assistant in the physical education department.
He and his wife, Heather, reside in Gainesville.
TINA
CARDIN (attended ’95–’00) is the co-owner
of Two By Two Ranch and Petting Zoo, and the owner of Little Bits
children’s clothing and furniture store in Chico. She (in
photo right) and her husband, ANDREW J. CARDIN
(B.S., Agricultural Business, ’96), a self-employed contractor,
take care of more than 100 animals, which include ostriches, emus,
llamas, goats, and geese. They often take their traveling zoo to
cities as far away as the Bay Area. The couple lives in Chico with
their daughter, Julie.
HEATHER (MILNE) NICHOLS (B.A., Journalism, ’00)
is the communications coordinator in the marketing/community relations
department at Mercy Medical Center in Redding, California. Her husband,
TYLER NICHOLS (B.S., Special Major, ’00)
survived the 61st floor of World Trade Center 2, on Sept. 11, 2001,
and is currently a financial adviser for Morgan Stanley. They are
expecting a child in January and reside in Redding.
MARK C. DAVID (B.A., Philosophy, ’01) recently
received his commission as a naval officer from Naval Aviation Schools
Command, Naval Air Station, Pensacola, Florida. During the 13-week
program, he received specialized training in navigation, ship handling,
engineering, naval warfare, and management.
MARCUS
DORIN (B.A., Physical Education, ’01) is a skateboard
team manager, skateboard clinic instructor, and is pursuing a master’s
degree in strength and conditioning at CSU, Chico. Dorin (in photo
left) taught the first for-credit university skateboarding class
in the world, in 2000 and 2001. He lives in Chico.
MARK HUNTLEY (B.A., Liberal Studies, ’01)
is a sixth-grade teacher at Willows Intermediate School in Willows,
California. He and his wife, Shanna, live in Willows with their
two daughters, Tristen and Kaitlyn.
CARRIE REYNOLDS (B.S., Business Administration,
’01) works for Franklin Templeton Investments in the dealer
communications department. She resides in San Francisco, California.
KRISTA ROBINSON (B.A., Journalism,’01) is
the manager of The Shop, a resale clothing store for the American
Cancer Society. Robinson also offers referrals for cancer patients.
She lives in Chico with her daughter, Deonna.
ZENAIDA SENGO (B.A., Art, ’01) is pursuing
her master’s degree at the Art Academy in San Francisco, California.
Sengo primarily works in watercolor and pencil and has exhibited
her work at galleries in Chico.

SONNENBERG (B.S., Recreation Administration, ’01)
is the manager of camping and recreation services for the Easter
Seals Central California. Sonnenberg (in photo right) spent time
as a counselor at Easter Seals Camp Harmon. He resides at Easter
Seals Camp Harmon in the Santa Cruz mountains.
JASON ADKINS (B.A., Art, ’02) is the director
of the 1078 Gallery in Chico. An artist himself, Adkins studied
in England, Spain, and New York. He lives in Chico.
Marriages/Anniversaries
ROBERT FICKERT (B.A., English, ’76) and
MARIE FICKERT (B.S., Sociology, ’78) celebrated
their 25th wedding anniversary June 11. She is an inspector for
the City of Chico Fire Department, and he is a sales representative
for Gerlinger Steel. The couple resides in Chico.
JEFFERSON J. GOOLSBY (B.A., English, ’82;
B.A., Information and Communication Studies, ’82) married
MEI-LING LEE (M.A., Music, ’01) June 8 in
Bidwell Park. She is pursuing a doctorate at the University of Oregon,
and he is a self-employed technical writer.
KEVIN ADAMS (B.S., Computer Science, ’86)
married Melanie White June 22 in Seattle, Washington. He is vice
president of engineering for Intelligent Results, and she works
for the Department of Justice in San Francisco. They reside in San
Francisco.
DANIEL BUCK (B.A., Spanish, ’87) married
Yi Liang Kao June 17. He is a visiting scholar at the East Asian
Institute, Columbia University, New York, and she is a landscape
architect for the city of Berkeley, California. The couple lives
in Berkeley.
CANDACE (SWIRE) ERICKSON (B.A., Information and
Communication Studies, ’90) married RANDY ERICKSON
(B.S., Recreation Administration, ’91) May 11. They both work
for Eli Lilly Pharmaceuticals.
MELISSA (O’GWIN) HANSEN (B.S., Agriculture,
’91) married Troy Hansen June 22. She works for the Tremont
Group, Inc., in Woodland, California, and he is a self-employed
farmer.
KAROL
(VIEKER) BARAN (B.A., Music, ’92) married her gay
partner Ira Baran July 6 in a Swedish civil ceremony in Stockholm.
She is an editor/translator for a Swedish software company and is
also the conductor of Stockholm’s Gay Choir and the Women’s

SUSAN (JOHNSON) SLOCUM (B.S., Business Administration,
’92) married Keith Slocum June 15 in Hawaii. She is a state
disability workers compensation specialist, and he is employed by
Sutter Seeds in Yuba City, California. They reside in Chico.

Lora Dalrymple June 1 in Chico. He works for The Fly Shop, and she
is employed by Pacheco Union School in Redding, California.
ANDRIA (PAUL) BUSCH (B.A., Sociology, ’93)
married Joseph Busch Sept. 7. She is employed by Butte County, and
he is a realtor for Century 21 in Gridley, California.
BECKY (EGGLESTON) JOHNSON (B.A., Liberal Studies,
’94; Credential, ’95) married CASEY JOHNSON
(B.A., Psychology, ’97) June 15 in Chico. She is a first-grade
teacher for Orland Unified School District, and he teaches at Willows
Intermediate School. They reside in Chico.
MITCHELL VANDERWALL (B.S., Recreation Administration,
’94) married Coleen Michelle Fogle May 18. He works for Webex
Communications, and she is employed by Life Masters in Rancho Cordova
as a human resources coordinator. The couple resides in Folsom,
California.

ANNE (VAN PUTTEN) THOMAS (B.A., Liberal Studies, ’94;
Credential, ’95) married Stephen Antquain Thomas June 28 in
Chico (see photo right). She teaches first grade and reading recovery
for the Gridley Unified School District, and he is an academic counselor
at CSU, Chico.
CHRISTINE
(LIRA) FARRELL (B.A., Child Development, ’95) married
Corey Farrell June 15 in Chico (see photo left). She works for University
Printing Services at CSU, Chico, and he works for Tri Counties Bank.
They live in Chico.
KIRSTEN (TOCHER) BARASH (B.S., Nursing, ’95)
married Jason Barash Aug. 17. She is a critical care nurse, and
he is a clinical microbiologist. They reside in Oakland, California.
TISHA (CRESPO) VENTI (B.A., Liberal Studies, ’96;
Credential, ’97) married Christopher Venti April 5 in Reno,
