SHARI EDWARDS (AB, Education, ’61) published As I Remember, a collection of columns about growing up in Willows she wrote for Tri-County Newspapers from 1998 to 2001. Edwards lives in Willows.
The Gonzalez family retired last spring. ROBERT GONZALEZ (BA, Industrial Arts, ’66; Credential, ’67) and VELMA (WEHRLE) GONZALEZ (BA, English, ’68) retired from Liberty Union High School District in Brentwood in spring 2004. MANNIE GONZALEZ (BA, Industrial Arts Technology, ’68; MA, Industrial Arts Technology, ’75) retired from Calaveras Unified School District in Calaveras in spring 2004.
KIM RODRIGUEZ HADDEN (BS, Nursing, ’67) was honored in October by Sonoma County with a Women and Industry award, which recognizes women leaders for supporting and advancing women in business. Hadden is vice president of operations and patient-care services at Sonoma Valley Hospital in Sonoma.
TIM TREGARTHEN (BA, Economics, ’67) is an economics professor emeritus of University of Colorado at Colorado Springs. He served as Associated Students president in 1966–’67 and was instrumental in establishing Community Action Volunteers in Education. In 1975, he was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis; in 1998, his condition forced him to retire. Tregarthen has lived at Pike’s Peak Hospice and Palliative Care in Colorado Springs since March 2003. He is revising the third edition of his textbook Economics using a voice-activated computer. He has a son, Doran, and a daughter, Brittany. Contact Tregarthen at timothy.tregarthen@uccs.edu.
ROBERT PAYNE (BS, Business Administration, ’68) is a lieutenant in the Santa Cruz Sheriff’s Office, where he has worked since 1982. He was honored in 2004 by the Sherman Block Supervisory Leadership Institute. He has been assigned to the Santa Cruz County Jail.
JUDY SITTON (BA, Social Science, ’68) was honored with the Athena Award at the Chico Chamber of Commerce Women’s Achievement Awards Celebration in November for her support of many community organizations and activities, and her success with a local business that has significant positive effects on the community. In 2000, Sitton retired as executive vice president of SunGard Bi-Tech, a software company she co-founded in 1981 with her husband Gary. She is the president of the board of directors of the Northern California Natural History Museum, CSU, Chico.
DON WARKENTIN (BA, Biology, ’68; Credential, ’73) was named interim president at West Hills College, Lemoore, in July 2004. In 1986, Warkentin became associate dean for the Lemoore Center and since supervised distance education at Naval Air Station, Lemoore, Firebaugh Center, and the Avenal State Prison.
DON CARLSEN (BS, Business, ’69) has been a National Football League official since 1989. He is president of the Chico chapter of the CSU, Chico Alumni Association. Carlsen lives in Chico and has two college-age children.

RON MCGUIRE (BA, Industrial Arts, ’70) was named Vocational Industrial Clubs of America National Advisor of the Year in 2004. McGuire teaches drafting, architecture, and 3-D animation at Roseburg High School in Roseburg, Oregon. He previously worked as a general contractor for 19 years.
JANICE K. BLACKWILL (BA, English, ’71) was honored by the Los Angeles County Office of Education as Little Lake City School District’s Teacher of the Year in September. She teaches deaf and hard-of-hearing students in Santa Fe Springs.
WENDY MATHEWS (BS, Home Economics, ’71) is the owner of Sew Special, an heirloom sewing store in Vista. She can be reached through www.sewspecialfabrics.com.
BARBARA MCELROY (BA, Music, ‘71; MA, Music, ’74) was named one of the 2004 Sonoma Valley Teachers of the Year. She teaches music at Sonoma Valley High School and directs the award-winning marching band. McElroy has been teaching for 30 years. She lives in Glen Ellen with her husband.
WARREN K. NELSON (BA, Geography, ‘72; MA, Geography, ‘80) is a financial representative for Northwestern Mutual Financial Network in Napa. He has two children, Brian and Kimberlee. In June, Nelson married Maritza Pick. They live in Yountville and New Zealand (where photo was taken).
SALLY POSNER (BA, Art, ’72) is an award-winning artist whose watercolors can be seen at Plumas Art Gallery in Quincy, Booklore in Greenville, and in two books, A is for Almanor and Plumas Sketches. Posner is also a certified building designer. She and her husband Robert have lived in the Lake Almanor Basin for 40 years. They have two sons, Sam and David, and two granddaughters.
ANKE PORTER GUNN (BA, Mathematics, ‘73) was recently selected as Teacher of the Year at A.D. Harris High School in Panama City, Florida. She teaches grade level 9–12 mathematics. She also teaches math at Gulf Coast Community College in Panama City.
LIZ TAVERNESE (Physical Education major, spring ’73 to spring ’75) is general manager of the Holiday Inn Capitol Plaza in downtown Sacramento. She has been with John Q. Hammons franchises for the past 25 years. Tavernese lives in North Natomas.
EDWARD REYES (BA, Recreation Administration, ’74) has been vice president of the Concordville Operations Center for State Farm Insurance Companies in Pennsylvania since December 2002.
KAREN BAIRD (BA, Art, ’75) is a sales associate at Coldwell Banker Residential Brokerage, Sunrise Marketplace, in Sacramento.
PAUL A. LAMOTHE (BS, Business Administration, ’75) is the vice president of Farm Credit West in Visalia, one of California’s largest agricultural lending institutions, where he manages the equipment leasing division.
DON LEVY (BA, Mass Communication, ’75) is a freelance videographer. During the National Basketball Association season, he is a cameraman for the Sacramento Kings.
KATHY CROUSE (BA, Social Welfare, ’76) is dean of students at Sierra High School in Manteca.
BOB LINSCHEID (BA, Public Administration, ’76; MA, Public Administration, ‘78) was recently named general manager of the Golden Baseball League’s charter team, The Outlaws, in Chico. He served as vice president/general manager for the Chico Heat, as well as three seasons as president of the Western Baseball League. Linscheid is owner of The Linscheid Company, a marketing and public relations firm.
LOIS HALLIDAY MCDONALD (MA, History, ’76) published Annie Kennedy Bidwell: An Intimate History (Stansbury Publishing, 2004). The book is available at heidelberggraphics.com.
MARK PETERSON (BA, Political Science, ’76) is vice president of sales and marketing at CommPartners, a voice-over Internet protocol facilitator in Las Vegas.
MICHAEL J. SOARES (BA, Psychology, ’76) received a Higuchi Endowment Research Achievement Award from the University of Kansas in October. Soares is the director of the Institute of Maternal-Fetal Biology at the University of Kansas Medical Center, where he is studying relationships between the placenta and health problems of pregnancy.
EDWARD E. TARVER (BS, Chemistry, ’76) is a scientist at Sandia National Laboratories, Analytical Materials Sciences Department, in Livermore. He has spoken internationally on technological advances in chemical-biological warfare agent detection.
JOHN BRENNAN (BA, American Studies, ’77) published Fruitvale on Foot (Oakland Heritage Alliance, 2004), a guide to historic walking tours of Oakland’s Fruitvale neighborhoods. He is a letter carrier for the U.S. Postal Service. His wife, Janet Samsel Brennan (BA, Speech and Drama, ’77), works for the San Lorenzo Unified School District. They have two children.
JEFF KUNDE (BS, Agriculture, ’78) is a fourth-generation grape grower in the Sonoma Valley. The 100-year-old Kunde ranch includes 800 acres of vineyards and the Kunde Estate Winery. “Everything we are doing is to keep this land in our family for the generations to come. This land is our heritage,” says Kunde, who runs the ranch with his siblings and cousins.
ROB SCHULMAN (BS, Agriculture, ’78) has owned his own business, Rob Schulman Consulting, in McMinnville, Oregon, since 1987 and has expanded it to include resolution and career consulting services.
KRISTINE OLDING (BA, Liberal Studies, ’79; Credential, ’80) is a sales associate for Coldwell Banker’s Folsom-Central office.
RICH PIRES (BA, Music, ’79) owns Herreid Music in Redding, which specializes in guitars, drums, and rock music equipment.
PAUL REID (BS, Business Management, ’79), CAROL REID (BS, Nursing, ’79), and their daughter Kate are on a two-year cruise aboard their 44-foot sailboat. The Reids sailed down the California coast from their home in Santa Cruz and are now sailing the South Pacific with New Zealand as their destination.
TIM SMITH (BA, Social Science, ’79; Credential, ’80) is superintendent and principal of Kings River Union Elementary School in Kinsgburg.
CATHY SPECK (BA, Information and Communication Studies, ’79) started a support group in 1984 in Davis, for gay people living in the area. The small group turned into a large and active organization before she decided to step down as the group’s leader because the organization was progressing so well. She and her partner, Linda Duval, perform as the folk duo Duval Speck.

MARK N. DAVIS (BA, Economics, ’80) is the owner of Davis Carpets, ColorTile in Santa Rosa. Davis and his wife Larri Ann have two sons.
DANIEL ORUM (MA, Physical Education, ’80) is president of International Data Group Entertainment, an Oakland-based company that produces interactive media magazines, such as GamePro.
DEBORAH ROBERTS (BS, Nursing, ’80; MS, Nursing, ’91) was hired in August as an assistant professor in nursing at Humboldt State University.
PHIL DAVIS (BS, Health Science, ’81) is deputy chief of the Elk Grove Fire Department. He is also president of the Sacramento Valley Fire Training Officers Association.
ABBY SUE (JACKSON) GOLDEN (BS, Business Administration, ’81) is a sales associate for Coldwell Banker Residential Brokerage’s Folsom Central office. She is a volunteer at Consumnes River Elementary School and Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts of America. She lives in Sloughhouse.
GLEN MARTIN (BS, Business Administration, ’81) is the manager for Standard Pacific Homes’ Northern California East Bay division. He became a novice viticulturist when he bought an acre of land in Danville in 2000.
ROBIN L. KAMILOS (BS, Biological Sciences, ’82) has provided 21 years of outreach and clinical support to the University of California, Davis Medical Center’s physicians and faculty in the area of cytopathology. She has participated in research and development of liquid base cytology applications for cervical cancer diagnosis. She is married to Dennis Kamilos.
JIM MCGRAW (BS, Nursing, ’82) has been promoted to commander in the U.S. Naval Reserve Nurse Corps. In August 2004, he led a Naval Reserve crew on a medical readiness training exercise to Honduras to provide medical services to more than 3,800 Honduran citizens. McGraw reported for active duty at the U.S. Military Hospital in Kuwait in January 2005. He can be reached at jim_mcgraw@charter.net.
EDDIE CABRERA (BA, Information and Communication Studies, ’83) is the owner and president of Cabrera Consulting Services in Sacramento, a minority-owned/certified computer staffing services company.
MICHAEL P. CANDELA (BA, Political Science, ’83) is a deputy district attorney in Butte County. He and his wife Kimberlee live in Chico with their daughter Jessica.
MARK LEA (BA, Industrial Arts, ’83) is a metal shop teacher at Sonoma Valley High School in Sonoma. He has been a bicycle frame builder, jeweler, prototype machinist, and maintenance director. Lea lives in Sebastopol.
CAROL RELLER (BA, Speech Pathology and Audiology, ’83) is a speech and language specialist at Aroche Union Elementary School in Herald.
DERIC ROTHE (BA, Information and Communication Studies, ’83) has been editor of the Auburn Journal since 1997. He and his wife Carmen have three daughters.
MARK R. JOHNSON (BS, Civil Engineering, ’84) is an assistant professor of pediatrics at Southern Illinois University School of Medicine in Springfield, Illinois. He and his wife Debra Feldott-Johnson have two children.
LISA SWARTHOUT (BA, Information and Communication Studies, ’85) was elected to the Grass Valley City Council in November. She owns Mill Street Clothing Company in Grass Valley and is married to Chris Therrien.
TODD BALES (BA, Information and Communication Studies, ’86) is the director of Training and Education for the Thomas Kinkade Company and has been a professional trainer for seven years, teaching seminars on customer service in the United States and abroad.
GREGG SUANING (BS, Mechanical Engineering, ’86) is developing a “bionic eye” device, a silicon chip that replaces the retina, as a treatment for blindness. He has also designed neurostimulators for the profoundly deaf and severely hearing impaired. He received his PhD in biomedical engineering at the University of New South Wales in Sydney, Australia, in 2003 and is on the academic staff of the University of Newcastle in Australia. Suaning lives on the central coast of New South Wales with his wife Margaret and three children.
TODD R. FREDRICKS (BS, Biological Sciences, ’87) is a veteran of Operation Iraqi Freedom and is a flight surgeon for Operation Enduring Freedom.
STEVE MAIN (BA, Recreation, ’87) is the owner of a chain of six Nevada Fitness health clubs as well as other businesses.
RHONDA (BOLES) HOLLAND (BS, Business Administration, ’88) is a loan officer at Fox Funding, Inc. in Corning. She has served on the Corning Elementary School board and Little League board. Holland and her husband Karl have three children.
MATT OLMSTEAD (BA, English and BA, Journalism, ’88) is co-creator, co-executive producer, and a writer for the new ABC television show Blind Justice.
TODD PANCAKE (BS, Business Administration, ’88) was promoted to captain at Southwest Airlines, where he flies the Boeing 737, based in Oakland. He lives in Reno, Nevada, with his wife Marin (Turner) (BS, Geography, ‘90), with their children Jessica, 4, and Nicholas, 2.
TIM PATTERSON (BA, Physical Education, ’88; Credential, ’00) has coached football at Linden High School for five years. He lives in Valley Springs.
JEFF FENNEL (BA, Information and Communication Studies, ’89) recently opened J. Fennel Studio & Gallery in Red Bluff. He worked as an artist and designer in the video game industry for 12 years. BRIDGET HRICA (BA, Recreation Administration, ’89) is a sixth-grade language arts and social studies teacher at Steinbeck Middle School in San Jose. She interned at Lassen Volcanic National Park and worked at the U.S. Forest Service visitor center in the Lake Tahoe Basin before obtaining a multiple subject teaching credential and master’s in education at San Jose State. Hrica and her husband James live in Ben Lomond.

JEFF BURGHARDT (BA, Journalism, ’90) is vice president and partner of the recently renovated Carmel Valley Athletic Club in Carmel.
DOUG CARLILE (BA, Psychology, ’90) is a fiscal consultant for the Senate Republican Fiscal Office in Sacramento. In his 15 years in government, Carlile has worked as gubernatorial appointee, deputy director, agency deputy secretary, and a fiscal, policy, and legislative consultant/analyst. He and his wife Tammy (BA, Psychology, ’85), a manager at Schools Financial Credit Union, have three children and live in Elk Grove.
MARK POTOSHNIK (BA, History, ’90) is the baseball coach at Roosevelt High School in Seattle, Washington. He is also the director of Northwest Baseball Academy in Lynnwood, Washington, a nonprofit educational organization for young athletes.
CHARLIE HUSTON (BA, Information and Communication Studies, ’91) recently published Caught Stealing, a crime thriller. He is a full-time writer. Huston lives in New York City with his wife, actor Virginia Smith.
MICHAEL A. ZINNIGER (BA, Information and Communication Studies, ’91) was recently promoted to lead designer in product development of The Upper Deck Company in Carlsbad. He designs sports memorabilia for the MLB, NHL, NFL, and the PGA Tour.
JODIE VOSSLER GLEASON (BA, Liberal Studies, ’92) was hired as the women’s basketball coach at Humboldt State University in August. She was the women’s basketball coach at Butte Community College in Oroville for five years and assistant coach at CSU, Chico for three years.
ANDREA DAVINI RUMIANO (BS, Business Administration, ’92) owns two Curves for Women franchises, one in Willows and one in Orland. She lives in Vina.
GWYN WEGER (BA, Information and Communication Studies, ’92; MA, Information and Communications Studies, ’95) published Planet Ord, a novel set in historic Fort Ord. She is a writer and editor at the Department of Defense in Monterey, and is married with two children.
BRIAN STARK (MA, Geography, ’93) was named executive director of the Land Conservancy of San Luis Obispo County, an environmental nonprofit group, in July 2004.
CLIFF WAGNER (BA, Political Science, ’93; MA, Political Science, ’00), chief of staff to Assemblyman Rick Keene, R-Chico, was assigned an Army tour of duty late August. Wagner is married and has two sons, 10 and 7.
RAUL MORA (BA, Social Science, ’94) became the Manteca High School dean of students in July. He began his teaching career in 1994 and was most recently vice principal of Joshua Cowell School, also in Manteca.
MIKE OBERMILLER (BS, Mechanical Engineering, ’94) was promoted to the rank of lieutenant commander in the United States Navy in July. He graduated from Purdue University with a master of science in engineering, with a specialty in construction management in August 2003.
DAN OLMSTEAD (BS, Civil Engineering, ’95), a civil engineer in Eugene, Oregon, ran the Butte to Butte race in July. He has run 10 marathons, including the Boston, New York City, and Chicago marathons. He is married to Courtney Leonard.
MY LO LY THAO (MS, Biological Sciences, ’95) joined the faculty at CSU, Stanislaus last fall. She earned her PhD at UC Davis.
STACEY SCOWLEY (BA, Communication Design, ’96) is doing television work in commercials for Kia and Sony and has had numerous guest appearances on shows such as Monk and Come to Papa. Her Web site is www.scowley.com.
SKIP SWANLUND (attended spring ’96 to fall ’99) is supervisor of Antioch Animal Services, the city’s animal shelter. He is a licensed veterinary technician.
CLARE E. (HUPP) REDA (BS, Math, ’97) is a mathematician at the Naval Air Warfare Center in China Lake. In July 2004, she climbed the east buttress of Mt. Whitney (14,494 feet) in four hours.
ANDREA SALZMAN (BS, Business Administration, ’97) is human resource manager for Blue Diamond Growers in Sacramento. She is pursuing her MBA at CSU, Sacramento.
SARA RAUDELUNAS (BA, Liberal Studies, ’98) is a real estate agent with ReMax Gold in Yuba City. Previously, she was an elementary schoolteacher.
KIMBERLY SCHWEDE (BA, Communication Design, ’98) is a freelance designer/illustrator and real estate company photographer and designer.
SHANE GODDARD (BS, Recreation Administration, ’99) is the recreation supervisor for the Rio Linda/Elverta Recreation and Park District.
MICHELLE P. KAUT (BS, Business Administration, ’99) graduated from the Sacramento Sheriff’s Academy in April 2004. She previously worked for the California Society of Certified Public Accountants as a legislative

JOSEPH LINDULA (MS, Electrical Engineering, ’00), an electrical engineer, works in the University of San Diego’s Master of Science in Global Leadership program, designed for military and civilian professionals wanting to pursue an advanced degree in a global environment.
JAG OHRI (BA, History, ’00) and ARUN OHRI (BA, Economics, ’00) own gas stations in Chico and Orangevale. The brothers were featured in an October Sacramento Business Journal article about immigrant entrepreneurs.

ILEANA R. ANGELO (BA, Political Science, ’02; BA, Communication Studies, ’04) is a development associate at Emanuel Medical Center, a nonprofit community hospital in Turlock. She previously worked in Washington, D.C., at the Leon Panetta Institute for Public Policy as an intern and staffer.
JOSEPH CADELAGO (BA, Political Science, ’02) is a constituent affairs representative for education in the Office of the Governor. He lives in Sacramento with his wife Amanda.

ANGELA PEARCE MCGREW (MA, Anthropology, ’02) is an associate conservator at the Autry National Center in Los Angeles. Previously, she was a conservator at the Smithsonian Institution’s National Museum of the American Indian in New York City. She and her husband Ashley, who is a lead preparator for the Getty Museum, and their son, Theron, live in Echo Park.
JOHN O. NELSON (BS, Recreation Administration, ’02) is a senior counselor for Eckerd Youth Alternatives, a youth at-risk wilderness educational program in Silver Springs, Florida.
ANTHONY TASSONE (BS, Business Administration, ’02) was promoted to senior associate at accounting firm Gilbert Associates Inc. He plans and supervises financial and compliance audits for nonprofit, government, and employee benefit clientele.
JENNIFER BRADLEY (BA, Anthropology, ’03) is serving one year in AmeriCorps as a supervisor and case manager for a mentoring program at Big Brothers Big Sisters in Denver, Colorado. She is also a volunteer Big Sister. After graduation, she interned at Jane Goodall Institute’s West Coast Roots & Shoots office in Berkeley, an education program that focuses on engaging young people in service-learning projects.
ERIK A. GAMMON (BS, Mechatronic Engineering, ’03) is a mechanical design engineer at Lemo USA, Inc. in Rohnert Park.
MATT B. WILLIAMS (BS, Business Administration, ’03) is a developer for an affiliate of Sutter Health, where his main focus is on business intelligence. He resides in Modesto.
ALEXIS DIAS (BA, Journalism, ’04) received three prestigious honors in communication excellence for projects she managed and produced during her internship with Tehama Group Communications at CSU, Chico, at the Crystal Awards in May 2004. She is a project manager at On Target Marketing in Merced.
SHARON FLICKER (BA, English, and certificate in literary editing, ‘04) is a proofreader for Blackstone Audio Books in Ashland, Oregon.
Marriages/Anniversaries
GARY SIMON (BA, Business and Psychology, ’92) and RENE (NEWNHAM) SIMON (BS, Biological Sciences, ’92) celebrated their 10-year anniversary in September. He is a real estate appraiser, and she is an agriculture inspector for Placer County. They live in the Sacramento area.
ANTOINE BOUTTE (BS, Business Administration, ’93) and Jennifer Monaghan were married Sept. 18. They live in San Diego.
JESSICA POYNER (BA, Political Science, ’94) and Thomas Collier celebrated their five-year anniversary in May. They met at a CSU, Chico social event. She is an attorney in Los Gatos. They have a one-year-old son, Asher.
STEVE WORTH (BA, Communication Design, ’96) married Debi Davis in May. He owns a graphic design business in Sacramento.
COLLETE AVERY (BS, Business Administration, ’97) and Sean Eiselt were married in June. She is studying to become a real estate broker.
SHARYL BACKUES (BS, Mathematics, ’97) and John Backues celebrated their 25-year anniversary in July. She teaches math at Oroville High School.
SUSAN KLIPPI (Credential, ’97) married BRADLEY W. SMITH (BA, Journalism, ’98) on June 25. She teaches first grade in the Folsom-Cordova Unified School District. He is a senior account executive with Ameriquest Mortgage Company in Sacramento.
CATHERINE SIMMS (BA, Public Administration, ’97) married George Azevedo in September 2003. They live in San Jose.
MICHELLE DAKAN (BS, Health Science, ’98) and ERIC PETERSON (attended spring ’94 to fall ’98) were married in September 2003. She is a health educator, and he is a project supervisor for California State University Research Foundation, Hat Creek District.

LISA JOHNS (BA, Social Science, ’01; MA, Social Science, ’04) married Cody LaPlaca on July 31. She works for Nevada Union High School in Grass Valley, where the couple resides.
KARI ADAMS (BA, Child Development, ’02) married Rico Barron in May. She works for Youth and Family Programs, and they live in Chico.
