Above and Beyond for the Community
The California State University, Chico Interfraternity Council and Panhellenic Council were awarded the Outstanding Community Service Award last spring at the Western Regional Greek Conference. Out of all the schools in the Western Region, Chico State excelled in their volunteer service for the community. The Chico State annual Greek Week was the focal point of their outstanding service. The week’s activities include

• A blood drive, which has become the single largest blood donation for the North Valley Blood Center.

• A canned food drive collecting more than 19,500 cans of food donated to Jesus Provides Our Daily Bread.

• The Fun Without Alcohol Fair, a day of activities promoting a fun, alcohol-free environment. Children from local elementary schools and surrounding areas come to campus for the events.

• Community Challenge, a day-long tournament, including obstacle races and tug-of-war, raises $5000 for the Boys and Girls Club of Chico.

• Wildcat Wipeout, co-sponsored with the Chico Police Department, provides over 150 Greek volunteers who clean up graffiti and make physical improvements to Bidwell Park and local elementary schools.

“This is a major accomplishment for the fraternities and sororities at Chico State. This award is well deserved for all their dedication and positive hard work in our community,” said Rick Rees, adviser to Greek organizations. “They are the best in the West! We couldn’t be prouder!”

The annual Western Regional Greek Conference, held in San Francisco, is the largest fraternity and sorority association in the United States and brings together nearly one thousand student members, international Greeks, and university professional staff members from all states west of the Rocky Mountains.
