AMERICAN INDIAN STUDIES
Surrounded by the traditional homelands of the Mechoopda Indians, the American Indian Studies program offers students an exciting opportunity to learn about the more than 500 sovereign Indian nations found today within the boundaries of the United States. Since its emergence during the Red Power era of the 1960s and 1970s, the discipline of American Indian Studies has dedicated itself to the articulation of an indigenous perspective that reflects the intratribal, intertribal, national, and global realities of Native peoples. Their voices and their experiences form the heart of this intellectual enterprise.

Here at Chico State, the American Indian Studies program offers a multi-faceted exploration of the historical and contemporary experiences of Native American peoples. Native and non-Native students work together in classes and internship settings that bridge the humanities and social sciences in their consideration of the histories, literatures, social and political cultures, world views, and legal status of Native peoples and their communities. The newly revised American Indian Studies minor incorporates a broad range of challenging courses in religious studies, English, anthropology, political science, communication studies, health and community services, and history.

These classes, and the minor in its entirety, encourage students to develop critical thinking, research, and cross-cultural dialogue skills that are equally useful in the university and in the community. American Indian Studies is an excellent choice for students considering professional careers in politics, natural resources, journalism, education, law, health, and human services as well as for those considering advanced degrees in the humanities and social sciences.
