Helping To Make CSU, Chico Better

Distinguished Alumni Dinner for Seven

Two aspects of editing Chico Statements give me enormous pleasure. The first is idiosyncratic. I derive pride in organization. A magazine like this one-one that represents all the university and serves alums, parents, faculty, staff, and others interested in Chico State -- provides plenty of opportunity to arrange red, blue, green, and yellow file folders in the nooks and crannies of my Sutter Hall office; to plan years' worth of issues; and, best of all, to create lists. Oh, those lists -- from the infinitesimal to the gargantuan-all of whose components I merrily highlight, postpone, revise-whatever it takes to make the magazine come out right.

The second aspect is vastly more substantial. It's the creating of an issue of Chico Statements: culling the bright ideas from the editorial staff, from readers, from other university magazines; sending that casserole to the design and photography staff (say, what about all that great purple and papyrus that covered the fall '98 issue?) and watching them apply their spices, adjust the temperature, and determine the final presentation; and then putting it in the oven, which is, in this cooking metaphor, the printer who multiplies the concoction into 122,000 servings.

In each issue, we try to bring you a fine assortment of the complexities, personalities, and accomplishments that make up the essence of Chico State. This spring '99 issue is, granted, a bit lopsided-it's nearly one-fifth devoted to pleas for your financial support. We are launching a major scholarship campaign, which will need a lot of dough (I can't seem to get out of the kitchen) to support our future students. I hope we are providing you good reasons for the pleas and that we are bringing those requests to you in an interesting way.

Of course, I'd like to ask for your support, too -- for Chico Statements. With $2,500, we could give you eight more pages of color in each issue; with twice that amount, we could give you eight more pages of text -- I get twice or thrice the number of good articles we ever have room for.

As Joyce says, more or less, the foos won't moos without the moolah. So, if you want to sponsor a page or a splash of color in Chico Statements, let me know. Better yet, if you want to sponsor a student at Chico State, read on.
