Floyd L. English Scholarships A solid university education is an invaluable foundation for the young people of today. The same was true for me when I attended Chico State College. My professors inspired me to work hard and pursue my interests in science and physics. Because of the training and motivation I received, I was fortunate to be able to go on and earn master's and doctoral degrees. Other Californians should have that same opportunity. Many people are aware of the need to improve science education in the U.S. As important as it is to raise the level of overall science literacy, it is also important to nurture those students who have a gift for science. Such individuals not only further humanity's search for knowledge, they also fuel our economy in a very real way. By providing the research that leads to development of new technologies and products, they act as trailblazers for new business opportunities for everyone. Three years ago, I established a scholarship program for students in the College of Natural Sciences. Ten students received awards at that time; in 1997 fourteen new students received awards; and last year, there was a new group of scholarship recipients. These are wonderful, engaging young scholars- they are the best reminders of how valuable scholarship support is to Chico State. Their motivation to succeed is inspiring, and there are certainly many other students that other friends of the university could assist. I am happy to be able to support scholarships that give students eager to learn the chance to pursue their dreams. Floyd L.
